Well, I'm totally new to MAME - I have to say that in advance.

I've downloaded mame-0.84.lha, extracted it, and typed mame.elf - it results in mame.elf: file is not executable.

What am I doing wrong? Many thanks for any kind of help :-)

    EDIT

Downloaded a few files and mame.080 - and on the first run it seemed to work, then later on it gave the same message. Maybe it's due to a low memory situation?

    EDIT AGAIN

Another noob question. Downloaded hyper pacman (and as a few other games give similar results, I think I'd better ask :-))

    The output is like this:

    Work:Mame> mame.elf roms/hyperpac.zip
    fuzzy name compare, running romperso
Running romperso (Rompers (Japan old version))

    done
    rp1_snd0.bin NOT FOUND
    rp1_prg7.bin NOT FOUND
    rp1_prg6.bin NOT FOUND
    rp1_prg5.bin NOT FOUND
    rp1_prg4.bin NOT FOUND
    ns1-mcu.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_voi-0.bin NOT FOUND
    rp1_chr8.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_chr-0.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_chr-1.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_chr-2.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_chr-3.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_obj-0.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_obj-1.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_obj-2.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_obj-3.bin NOT FOUND
    rp_obj-4.bin NOT FOUND
    rp1_obj5.bin NOT FOUND
    rp1_obj6.bin NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the game cannot be run.
    Work:Mame>

I have some assumptions what it means, but no idea how to fix it.

    ok,

about mame 0.84, check that +e flag is set. I can't see any reason why it would say it's not executable (unless it's corrupted). So it must work anyway.

Now you probably didn't notice, but there is a builtin gui if you run in wb mode (you have to get guigfx.mcc from aminet though).

Anyway if you prefer to run it from shell, use this syntax :

    mame.elf hyperpac

don't give the full path of the rom, but just its mame name.

Thanks, that works. For some reason even the GUI is coming up now (well, there are a thousand MorphOS hits before, but I presume it's either because of nlist or guigfx mcc, I'll check out later). Many thanks again :-)

Here are the debug outputs: one from the getramdebuglog command, and the other from the debug output window of MorphOS.

Note, I still presume there is something wrong around my nlist/guigfx mcc installs, rather than a bug in Mame. Don't know if the debug outputs help or not to determine the bogus component.

About the "NOT FOUND" messages, you probably miss some "bios" files in your roms directory or have a old .zip game file, any way get this files from this two places and you will have a lot of good games working ;-) .

    Basic files Here .

    The Games Here .

PS: Fab, here the tcpip bug, still happen, i canĀ“t start mame 0.84 properly without a tcpip stack working, is this a bug or my setup :-? .

Ok, I've decided to go the easiest way:

    Ram Disk:> version guigfx.mcc
    Guigfx.mcc 19.2
    Ram Disk:> version guigfx.library
    guigfx.library 20.0
    Ram Disk:> version render.library
    render.library 40.8
    Ram Disk:> version nlist.mcc
    NList.mcc 20.111

Would someone check whether these version numbers are correct or I have something not up to date? Thanks in advance:-)

I've finally figured it out. It's bsdsocket.library (or better the lack of it) which causes the hits. When a TCP/IP stack is running, there are no hits anymore.

I think I forgot to mention the most important thing.

Your port is simply AWESOME! I love the GUI and the ease of use. There are a few games which I cannot run with 0.84 (complains about video modes, despite I use windowed mode), and I run them with 0.80 from shell (is there an url for 0.69? I'd like to experiment with that and the games I cannot run even that way :-)), and 128 MByte RAM is too few for some games, but in overall I simply love it.

So in short, I wanted to say THANK YOU for maintaining the port :-)

It's good to have many versions of MAME handy, as with every new version MAME seems to get bigger & slower... You can see the difference with many games.

And if low on memory (128MB :-) ), it's worth getting NeoMAME aswell, it can run only NeoGeo games but as it is a LOT smaller executable, it will save some memory.

You can set it in the command line or in the gui. And you can switch at runtime with ralt enter (by default, see input configuration keys if you want to change it). You can also switch overlay on/off with shift enter.
