A silly question and the idea might even be worse, but still ;-) :

Has anyone ever thought of animated backgrounds/wallpapers? Apart from being a complete waste of system resources, it would be nice having a working aquarium as wallpaper, or maybe a nice animated panoramic view, or a twinkeling star filled sky or ...etc. Screenblankers do this ofcourse, but it would be nice to still being able to use the system whilst having such an animation running in the background. Does such a thing allready exists on AmigaOS/MorphOS (or on any other OS)?

    Just wondering :-D

Or how do you like this, displaying TV or a movie in the background with transparent windows in the forground ;)

I know they can do just that on the Amiga's with a Mediator in them ( I did it on mine) It would be cool to have that on the Pegasos

of course. a simple wallpaper/wb/ambiant screen probably can be a gif file.
I was looking into mpng, but it may not be ready for this yet.

And what about this one ? ;)

Nice guys, nice -> it means it is possible, there are sources...but is there such a program that can load/use other animations/effects than those included in the mentioned programs? Maybe a gif-loader, like Cecilia mentioned?

Hmmmm, maybe if we give Zapek $$$ :-D

Has anyone tried to use an animated GIF as a backdrop to see what it does? I would think it needs some code to make it work though. I know they work in the browsers so it shouldnt be hard to make it happen on Ambient as well.

For years I've blamed windows to waste resources for
unnecessary eyecandy ... and you want it for the peg ?

It exists for Linux. But I remember darkly 1997 at the "Computer97" in Cologne Phase 5 showed as a demonstration for their new PPC boards an MPEG-movie as a workbench background. So it must be possible somehow.

    Hi!

I'm using, since many years, a funny litle proggy, witch name RipplePPC... Very nice on a background with some water, or a beautyfull (Elena) fractal: That made a water/mirror effect... and is "light"!

    Surely finded on Aminet :)

    Tcho!!

P.S.: just a litlle thing: if you have some tool bar downside of your Workbench/Ambient, let put that stuff a bit up!!! ;))

I suppose it is very easy to make such tool. You just need to open backdroped window and play what you need in it. For example if multivew will have option to open window backdroped - it will work in such way :)

Then you wouldn't see any icons.

I compiled a native MOS version of Ripple some time ago.

You used to be able to do this with a video in stream in BeOS, you could have a TV program or DVD as your background!

    Anyone seen Solaris (modern version)?
The same planet effets would make an amazing but not too intrusive background.

Yeah that is very cool, and why can't we just the first OS with a 3d
desktop enviroment. That would be great. :-D

or putting on a VR-helm and step into your desktop.

Actually, you can take advantage of the 3D abilities of every video card out there, and not just for eyecandy sake, which is something many people find disturbing.
One of the most unpleasant things you must do in a windowing environment is clipping. That is, taking care of which parts of the screen need a redraw, when things move. Now, imagine that you use the graphics card's capabilities to map windows bitmaps as textures into polygons (usually, a pair of coupled triangles do as a rectangle). There you have it: You can really depth-arrange windows in real three dimensions, flashy "flight" effects included.
There's more: Thanks to the graphics abilities to reescale bitmaps, bilinear filtering included, you can resize windows doing NOTHING compute-wise. Imagine the speed gain.
This is what Microsoft is doing in their new "Longhorn", "Aero", whatever user interface: At last, use the graphics abilities every computer now has, and that are only catered for by video games.
Now, let's wonder: David ("zapek" Gerber, ambient's programmer), can this concept work in MorphOS' desktop? Are Intuition's windows something abstract that can be rewritten, to make use of 3D hardware?

(note: I've posted a new thread about this, I think it would be better to reply there)

    See ya!
