Will MorphOS 1.5 include a DefIcons alike utility?

I think this must be a must for any modern operating system. Specially for people that don't like file managers and want the icons to automatically open its associated program.

It's very frustrating when you try to open a text document and all you got is an error message stating that "file is not executable".

    ĝis la revido! :)

I agree with earlier posters, it's a must have. Plus, it would be nice to have the old filemanager back in 1.5, but this time working and with filetype recognition.

Morphos 1.4 has basic deficons builtin for disks.
You can modify or add default disk iocns by copying the icon you want
    to ENV-ARCHIVE:sys and renaming it.
    ie..
For a default cdrom icon you would rename the icon to 'def_CD0disk'.
Any masstorage mountlist can be used.
For a zip drive with a mountlist of ZIP it would be 'def_ZIPdisk'

    Thanx

    Hi tonho,
EVERYONE here is asking the same thing for months and months (you can find a lot of threads about this argument around here) but still no answer has arrived from MOS develpment team. Someone in the Team told me about 9/10 months ago he was thinging what was the best way to implement a filetype recognition system in MorphOS. From that date I received no news about the statement of this iussue...

Don't know about this specific issue, but there are some long awaited features, which are slowly reaching mature state.

They have probably a life long list of TODO-s, and they are making their best: I'm hoping for this feature (and many others) as well to come out soon.

I agree its a MUST have feature =) but so is a lot of other goodies! now lets wait and see what 1.5 has. Talking about 1.5 does anyone know when they plan to release it OR a feature list of it?.. the only thing im really dissapointed with Genesi is the total lack of releasing MUCH wanted/needed bugg fixes.

    Hi tonho,

A little Tip for you, i use Scalos 1.4 as a complete
Ambient-Replacement, the icon.datatype v44 must be installed and the matched icon.library is needed.

Same procedure as the Amplifier and IconEdit become to work.

Ok. there is many more, but to the reason that my
system works not 100% save, i work on a complete
    FAQ, to make this save.

Features: DefIcons know'n from OS3.5 work now with out a problem, Scalos let you import the well
    known Toolsdaemon-menu, a great thing!

    The Bugs:

Disk-Information freezes the Desktop, Icon- and
Tooltype-Editing is not save, so impossible!

You need also all the known mui.classes to became
Scalos to work, at last i edit my startup-sequence
and replace the LoadWB with loadwb.scalos.

And now i can productive work an my desktop, my
complete faq came in here, than i remove those
    information-problems and my newage-iconedition is
complete ported to morphOS, around end of february, i hope.

But note, there's help on the way, seems i think the same way, and now i use at the same way ;-)

    Best wishes

    Raoul.

Every good OS must have it. I think, it will be implemented in MOS very soon.

Now, I use well configured Directory Opus instead of Ambient.

    @ serge

I just want say : we need an answer from authors of ambient! Ity's different :-D
This thread will probably become kilometric as all the others relative to this well known 'filetype recognition iussue' and maybe like all those others you'll have no answer again.
Don't hate me Gerber, I make only notice them how things are. It's useless to continue to ask infos about this iussue if the direct responsables will not answer them..

    Hello Raoul,

Have you some screen-shots of your Scalos?
    What is the "matched icon.library"?

Could Workbench work with the same tips like scalos
    ?

    Hallo serge,

    You ask,
    >Have you some screen-shots of your Scalos?

Yes, but not now, my work on my newage-skin is
not complete, please be patient, give me a week
or two. How can i store my screenshots here?

    >What is the "matched icon.library"?

    MorphOS has it's own icon.library in MOSSYS:Libs
i replace this thing the original icon.library from
OS3.9 (from OS3.5 may work also)

Could Workbench work with the same tips like scalos
    ?
No. But please be patient, i have download the tips
"AmiWB on PegasOS" from www.elena-fractals.it, i'll
try this today, give me a few days to test this.

If i have useable results, then i'll post this here.

    Best whishes

Ok, some months later, sorry for that, i must
learn many things about what goes and what
not, here's the hard answer, please dont try
scalos, it's a deadend on MOS, i'll recommend
the long way - download the AmiWBonPegasos-
Package, the basic-steps are explained in this
archive, and than test and snoopdosing every
    program you want to use.

I didn't have enough time to translate my
WBonPeg-ger-Howto in to english, this howto
explaines the way to get most of the WB-
tools and utilities get working with and on
the AmiWB on Pegasos, but sadly only in
german, my english is not good enough :(

If i can found a translator, who translate my
work with out failures, then it may be, i hope,
i can this howto upload here.

For now i can say, i work ( not testing or debugging)
i'm really working on a fully functional
    WB-on-Ambient, ToolsDaemon-
    like menu's, DefIcons, textsortet directories,
and many other helpfull features and well
known tools, plus PNG-Icons and so on, but it
    was a hard way!

    Best wishes

I disagree, it's not anything I have high in priority or care for at all. "People who don't like file managers" must really be a minority!

The only thing I use icons for is in my ambient toolbars and to make the HDD partitions look nice on the Ambient desktop.

I've been using DOpus Magellan for file managing all the time on my Pegasos and don't see why anyone would go through the pain to use the slow icon system for fiddling around with their files.

Only people who seem to be using icons are old amigans, no windows or linux users I've met have used anything else but a nice normal file manager, so "every modern OS needs it" doesn't sound true at all.

No, let the MOS developers worry about important stuff instead. That's my humble opinion anyway.
OnyxSoft - Amigans never surrender, they know they can do it better...
