Number of things:
- Just in CPU grunt the 3700U is probably tens of times faster (*)
- Memory latency and bandwidth are maybe ten times better (*)
- Any graphics operations are GPU accelerated
- amd64 browsers have JIT
- Network driver and network stack is far more optimal
*) These are guestimates, it's really hard to find any common numbers to compare against.
This being said, Wayfarer itself is damn impressive in spite of all the disadvantages in place. You can get some idea how good it is if you try to run some PPC Linux on the G5 and try some of the browsers there.
