    Hello all

    Marcik. Thanks for releasing Sputnik. It looks promising. However, it seems there is some confusion as to what bugs are showing up and how to correct them. I installed Sputnik and not only could I not display text and images properly but it corrupted my HD :(

    Can somebody please post a clear step by step whats needed to run Sputnik reliably? (Instead of browing 4 threads about it?)

    While marcik hasn't posted here yet, I will write how to troubleshoot TTEngine2 related problems. TTEngine2 is the font engine used by Sputnik for text rendering. If there is no text on displayed WWW pages, follow these steps:

    1. Make sure ttengine2.library has been installed into LIBS: by Sputnik install script.
    2. Make sure ttengine2.database file is placed in ENV: (it may be Sputnik copied it to ENVARC: only, just reboot then, or copy the file).
    3. Make sure the set of TrueType fonts has been installed by Sputnik installer to SYS:FONTS/_ttf/. These fonts are downloaded by the installer from Internet.
    4. If there is still no text, upgrade ttengine2.library to v0.17 (available here). Version 0.14 included in Sputnik archive does not support some pixelmodes used by Voodoo and Permedia based cards. Just unpack the archive and copy ttengine2.library over old one, then reboot.
    5. If there is still no text, contact me :-).

    NOTE 1
    There is no confilct between ttengine2.library and ttengine.library. They can be both installed, and even be used by some applications at the same time. They use separate database files.

    NOTE 2
    You can add more fonts modifying ttengine2.database file. It is plain text one and format should be self-explaining. There is GUI based font manager planned however.

    NOTE 3
    ENV:ttfcodepage file, while loaded by TTEngine2, is irrelevant to Sputnik, as Sputnik passes all texts to TTE2 as Unicode.

    You better ask stuntzi (but I doubt it's anything important)... ;)

    I get that "FindSemaphore "stuntzi" FAILED" too when checking Snoopium logs. But I also doubt it's anything serious...

    @CISC

    Or you can redownload archive as I've uploaded version that doesn't need it.

    So, if you have TTE2 installed (Krashan descibed very well what's needed), your MUI is 16.09.06 version (check in MUI prefs), some new Ambient version (as older ones conflicts with new MUI), iconv.library is in LIBS: you have 4 files in SYS:Prefs/Presets/HTML then you have everything what is needed to run a Sputnik.

    @Framiga

    That Findsem stuntzi is some interal MUI thing that doesn't affect Sputnik.

    Thanks Marcik but it must be something wrong here.

    Mui4 is the latest (ver 20.6373 16.09.06)

    Ambient is:

    http://fabportnawak.Free.fr/ambient/ambient-1.43-20061111.lha

    but it doesn't starts.

    Tomorrow i'll try to post the logtool output (a hit muimaster related)

    Thanks :-)

    In my case, sputnik boots, I get images, layouts, and all that, but I have no text.

    I had only text in the buttons and in the textfields, but since I changed a little the mui config (used some new-kind buttons), I can only see text in the buttons when I hover them.

    I have checked the checklist, and everything seems fine. I have a peg1 with a Radeon7500.

    Ahh also please don't use bitmap frames (for buttons and strings currently) with Sputnik (if you want to use it in them rest of OS, then disable them in MUI config for Sputnik).

    Texts inside MUI gadgets (buttons, strings, etc.) are not rendered by TTEngine2, MUI gadgets use standard system font engine. But you have no text on pages, then run LogTool to get debug output and look for a line like "TTENGINE2: Unsupported pixel mode x". Then tell me what number is x. Also information about screenmode (is it 8/16/24 bit) will be helpful.

    Is it possible to add some error-handling code in Sputnik for these errors? Ie, check that Ambient / MUI / TTEngine versions are correct, perhaps show Krashans instructions if it detects fonts not beeing rendered etc. Just a thought.

    Sputnik works great here now. After doing some investigations, I discarted ttengine2 as cause of failure (no errors on log), so I started to check things again. Finally, the trouble was with the fonts. By some reason, they where corrupt, badly downloaded, or something like that. I finally saw at snoop, they where failing, but they where there. Downloading them again, did the trick. So now, I'm a happy sputnik beta user ;).
