Morph Icons Project!

It has come to my attention through several people that MorphOS is in desperate need of several Icon-Packs for different applications. How many of us have a hodge-podge of PNG icons, glow-icons, old amiga icons, and MWB icons?

A user, Mathias, simply asked for a place where he could ask for some icons. Nicolas Sallin seconded the motion. With that, I think it's time to go to the community. What do you guys say? Can we organize a "Morph Icons Project"?

    Hi Targhan and others

Well there's already one of my icons in the download section - a PSA one, and I have several others I have knocked up here on this system Im happy to share.

My most recent one is a MPlayer icon with DVD written across the front so I can have two dockbar icons one throwing up a requestor for avis etc and the other to play track one of my DVD player! :)

Where do u want em sent!????

i think i mentioned a few weeks ago that i had been inspired to make some icons myself. this came about when that interesting PowerIcons program was made available. I was able to see png icons on my WinUAE. WOW!
    cool beans! :-D

anyway, as there seems to be a pleathora of butterflies buzzing around, i figured I'd try my hand at making a few of those as icons. i have since noticed that others have also used this idea. but MINE are different (heh, heh). Without going into all the details, let me say that I am using ZoneXplorer in the creation of said butterflies.

I've made about, oh, 10, but before I upload I want to make more.

At the moment, these are just bugs. they have no indication as to programs, utilities, etc. I can try those later. For this first set, i wanted to just make specTACuar icons.

    damn it!
    :-D

ps. I just converted one of the icons into a jpg so i could use it as an AV here. take a look!

Thanks for the intrest guys! I think, for the moment, that any "loose" icons can be converted to .png and uploaded to the icons directory in the gallery. Any small collections could just be sent to Bifford or myself.

I think the first thing is to identify what icons should be made. What applications need them? There are a lot of programs used by the community, so it'll probably take some work to locate them all. Then, there is how to package them up...

    Hi all

Targhan : I am Mathias :) Thanks to talk about this topic here ! This is an idea about realisation :

    1. On a dedicated page, each user who needs icons give the name of a tool, game or other. This adds a line in an ordered list (alphabetical or by category).

    2. For each name, artitsts could add an icon that appears at the good place in the list.

    3. Users have an overview of all existing icons and download what they like.

Unfortunately, I had some personal matters to attend to over the last couple of days. I have literately been running on fumes here. I think most of it is out of the way, and should be able to give more attention to this topic now ;-)

So, does anyone have an idea other than the one mentioned by Mathius about how to set up such a project? ( I'de like to floor a few ideas before commiting to one concept. )

I mean there are things from SongPlayer to SGrab that need PNG Icons. Since AOS 3.x now supports png-icons (through a third party lib), would it be a good idea to open this up for discussion on Amiga.org as well?

i think Mathias has an interesting idea.

although, this wouldn't make for coherant "sets" of icons. but not everyone is into that.

sometimes, just a bunch of really cool icons for ones FAV programs does the trick!

and what if someone liked an icon but it needed to be made into a PNG? they should be able to upload those so people like me could transform them. :-D

    @cecilia:

take one PNG graphic, rename it from blah.png to blah.info! That's all there is to making a png icon. The reverse is also true. Take an icon, rename it from blah.info to blah.png--now you can tinker with the icon in your favorite paint program!!! Couldn't be easier!

So, do we really need a special site? Couldn't we just use the
gallery or something for uploading png icons?

The problem is, not many people have uploaded their icons, and I doubt, if new "icon site" would solve that...

Of course, "Amiga users" would be more likely to upload png icons to new site than here...

i understand that. I'm made some. but what some people might find a little difficult is to manipulate the alpha channel to make an icon COOL.

    That's all I'm saying. :-D

    Hello,

I think it would be nice to have a dedicated place to store ALL kind of icons for our beloved OS (Morphos / AOS / whatever but amigaflavored stuff).

A such library must have some feature like attribut to order them. For example :

    collection (ex: glowicons)
file extension used (png / info / iff...)
    author (ex : no comment)
kind (ex : directory, system, tools, must be multicriteria. Ex : directory + system = prefs directory)
    ...

Another nice feature would be the dynamic package build to download in one shot all the icons wanted.

There are more than 1500+ icons (not really sorted... :/) available from Aminet. It might be interesting to ask icon's author about this project. Distribution licence ask most of the time to distribute package in a complete way (all files. not some of them).

I would be very happy to give some of my free time to write some php code and setup an account to host this site.

    Tcheko.

    agree Tcheko!
one problem with getting icons from aminet is that i have NO idea what they look like!!!
sure, downloading a file to unarchive later isn't abig hardship :-D , but it would be more intelligent to SEE the icons before the user gets them.

And to have them organized in some logical form.

    yup! let's do this! :bloons:

Thanks! I'm sure that I could get some space arranged to host such a site. I certainly wouldn't mind having it include GlowIcons and even old MWB icons too. (Even NewIcons!) Just because I have a great affenity for MorphOS, I still have my old A1200 around :-)

    @Thargan,

If you can have some spare space to hold icons library, I would gladly develop some php templates to handle the data.

Would be nice to share your account database from morphos users also. (no need to register twice for uploading icons for example).

    Regards,

    Tcheko.

If you would like, I could provide you with one of the modules I use here so that you can see how the system checks if the user is logged in. Then, we could simply plug the system into MZ :-) This way, we don't have to make any new accounts at all!

I would like to make some icons too.. is there a standard frame for these icons? ex. folder,hd,cd-rom,etc.

    format?
    size?
    number of icons?
..there will be only one left.
