Want to see Linux running on my new Peg2. I am still not familiar with
Linux installation and I got a fear that somehting may go wrong due to
the fact that all the Linux distros I have check are installing a
small part of the new OS into the boot partition of Peg.

I wonder if I could download a PPC Linux live CD or DVD -for Peg2-.
T?40~hen I can burn it and boot from the CD / DVD. I got a bootable
DVD-ROM drive. This way I may can take a basic trip to linux with a
GUI and some basic features (I hope) without having to change anything
    of my MOS system.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

Never used an off-the-shelf Linux distribution Live-CD on the Pegasos, just custom stuff like the Mac-on-Linux-CD for the Pegasos.

But a distrbution I can recommend in general is openSUSE. I'm using it on the Pegasos and x86 alike.

There is a PegasosQuickStart guide right on opensuse.org and at powerdeveloper.org you will find posts by Peter Czanik who is very committed to making openSUSE run on the Pegasos & Efika and also compiles a lot of multimedia packages for PPC.

Why dont you install Ubuntu 7.10? In my opinion its the easiest Linux distro to install. Look for the gutsy install and boot kernels and download the alternate PPC Ubuntu ISO.

5 cd's to install linux? Last time i installed Ubuntu linux on a x86 machine i only needed 1 cd.

I just put the cd in the machine and installed it, no problems.

Read some of the PegasosQuickStart and it seems to need a lot of doing to get it up and running. And the risk is doing something the wrong way and @#*%# my harddisk.

I think i leave Morphos alone on the Peg, and have Ubuntu on my x86 laptop instead.

Thanks to my friend AmigaGr I found a link an older ubuntu LiveiveCD
    ISO:

Mac (PowerPC) and IBM-PPC (POWER5) desktop CD

For Apple Macintosh G3, G4, and G5 computers, including iBooks and PowerBooks as well as IBM OpenPower machines.

I burned the ISO on the CD and of course it did not boot on the Peg2.

Ok Peg is not mentioned on the supported machines list -really does Peg belong to those OpenPower mahcines? Just asking....-

But I had a little hope that it could boot...

    But no results...:)

Ok I will not give up searching :o)

Got a crazy idea but there could be a way to install a Linux distro on
an external USB Hard Drive and boot from there everytime I want to run
Linux? IS such stuff supported on Peg2 -boot from external USB Hard
    Drive-?

Is there any Linux distros that supports instalation in such drives?

To Cego: Hello - I tried to install Ubuntu 7.10 but i encountered two fatal issues:
1./ I cannot start Xorg (so I boot in console mode only)
2./ ethernet connection is apparently not started and i don't know how to activate it (everything should be OK anyway as ubunutu 7.10 downloads some software during installation)

    Hi,
I've installed successfully in my Peg2G4: Ubuntu 5, OpenSUSE, Debian and Ubuntu7.10.

For ubuntu7.10 I've downloaded only one CD from this link:
    http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/gutsy/release/ubuntu-7.10-alternate-powerpc.iso

    read this thread too:
    http://www.powerdeveloper.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1406&highlight=

    and thanks to Peter Czanik!

On my system I've both MOS and Ubuntu on the same HD without any problem (you can make the partitions on MOS before start the linux installation)

@BeNZo: but what boot image are you use to start ubuntu? i download too the 7.10 alternate but seams that vmlinuz-chrp.initrd boot image is missing. i burn a new cd with this image in, the ubuntu installation starts but is freezing during the installation of the ubuntu stuff.
the same hapens with opensuse10.3, fedora8.
so far only debian4.0r2 working ok for me.
what are you typining for ubuntu at the boot prompt?

@Taerwin: are you using the 1gb ethernet or the 100mb?
for me only the 100mb (via) ethernet works ok.

i've installed ubuntu 5 (edgy i think?) on my peg. it was quite easy - with the help of the Pegasos Book by Geoffrey C:) I highly recommended it if it comes to linux on the pegasos (its a free download)! ubuntu is nice, after you dowload some packages, missing codecs (mp3 fe..) it could be a really nice system - just slow as hell. make sure you have enough ram - the more the better!

    @amigagr:

    at this link http://genesi.hu/ubuntu/
download the files "gutsyalt_inst" (for installation)
    and then "gutsyalt_boot" (for boot)

at SmartFirmware insert Gutsy CD and at the prompt write:
gutsyalt_inst <rest of command> (depends from your config and partitions)

after the installation use gutsyalt_boot in the SF boot command line.

the image on 7.10 iso doesn't works with the Pegasos.

i.e. my boot command line (Ubuntu7.10) is:
    "boot ide:0 gutsyalt_boot root=/dev/hdc8 video=radeon:1024x768@75"

(it's inserted as option in the bootselect.img file, on the 1st partition)
    bye

    @All,

No need to download an iso and burn a cd to install ubuntu gutsy, download instead gutsy_netinst kernel and perform the install over internet.

    Hello,

Thanks for the thread but I was aware of it. Yet when I edit "/etc/network/interfaces", the lines to uncomment are real comments!

For ethernet I use the 10 / 100 Mbps port.

And I have the issue that I have only access to console mode.

I will give another try to the install; possibly I missed some option in the process.

Also I am using a radeon9250 - could it be the root cause for not having the window mode?

Otherwise I previously managed to install Ubuntu 5.10, which is pretty straightforward with the help of the Pegasosbook. It ran quite nice except for some occasional failures of Firefox - which is the main reason why I am trying to upgrade.

Oups: I just noticed the command line given by beNZo - will try it now!

OK so I installed Ubuntu 7.10 PPC desktop version all over again and I am still stuck in console mode.
I tried to apply the workaroung from Feisty but apparently I cannot connect to the outside world (the last line of my /etc/network/interface file is "iface eth0 inet dhcp" and is not commented).
Furthermore I tried to have a look at xorg.conf but I cannot find it in X11 drawer.

If anybody outhere has a hint to give...

@cego: in /etc/ drawer I noticed a 'gdm' and a 'gnome' drawers. Anayway the only choice I could have during the install is between the SSH server, the desktop install and a third one.

    I chose desktop installation.

    Linux on Peg2.
Firstly I wish to thank Peter Czanik for all his helpfull advice.
After installing X-Ubuntu on an Efika I decided to install the Ubuntu 7.10
on my Peg2 using the 7.10 .iso and the gutsyalt_install and _boot files.
After installing the files from the 'burnt' cd I had to plug in a usb keyboard
-mouse combo to continue. I beleive there is a firmware fix for this.
Using the console - Alt-F2 I downloaded the Xfce 4 desktop program -
    sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
    followed by
    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
    After transfering the gutsyalt_boot to the boot folder and making this HD the third device , from the firmware I type;
    boot hd0:0 boot/gutsyalt_boot root=/dev/hdc1
Two points here; IMHO Xfce 4 boots up pretty quickly and I did not encounter any network problems.
I still however, prefer using Morphos. Roll on 2.0

    Hi Krag!

Alt+F2? Ok I give it a try and see what happens.

For the keyboard and mice issue: there is a workaround detailed by Neko on powerdeveloper.org (http://www.powerdeveloper.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1406&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)

Installing Linux on Peg2 seems like assembling some furniture from IKEA where half of the screws are missing.

I will install Linux when i get a distro that install as easy as morphos, but that is probably never going to happen.
