    Hi all here and there!

I just got USB 2.0 PCI card and I wish to buy a DVD+-R/RW burner... Does these devices work with Pegasos and USB2.0??? It starts to be really cheap and so I would like to buy the external one, instead of internal one...

Has anyone here good experience with this?

    Thanx and bye, MarK.

I recommend you not use external devioces for devices that requites a lot of speed as DVD burners. HDD drives can be good for sharing data and others, but not as using all time on USB. Better buy an IDE to USB box... And wait to BurnIT3 about compatibility list and then buy one that supports DL... (my personal choice is plextor, I will wait to BurnIt3 and a Plextor DVD R+/-R/(+/-)RW/+R DL/-R DL burner...).

What is the problem with high speed USB transfer? I have not made the choice yet...

And when talking about ButnIt3, sorry, I really will not choose this solution, because I have already burnt some DVDs with my FryingPan and that really satisfies me... And for more, there is nothing like compatibility list, everything should work as it is :-)

    Bye, MarK.

I thought that's what he is talking about?

Since we have no Firewire support and I have a USB2 card (thanks to Computercity), I am also interested in the status of support for the 480MBit High Speed mode on Pegasos.
ArakAttack was no solution last time I checked.

If you install an USB 2.0 card, how much faster performance will you receive compaired to the onboard USB 1?

USB 2.0 alias EHCI is currently not supported by MorphOS 1.4.x. However, most of the USB 2.0 controller integrates a "companion" HC (Host controller) for USB 1.1 compatibility.

It means you should be able to use your USB 2.0 card as an UHCI one (which is supported by MorphOS). It also means you won't have any speed benefit ATM.

    MarK,
    forgot USB 2.0 for now!
MorphOS/Poseidon can't handle REAL (=480MBit=USB2.0 High Speed..) USB 2.0 connections.
At the moment you can only use 2.0 devices at 1.1 speed, this means forget you can burn useing USB peripherals..

MarK, as long as MorphOS does not support High Speed mode of USB2, it is not up to the job you intend it to use for.
With the USB1, speeds of about 900KB/s can be expected whereas the real USB2 is good for 30MB/s (more or less depending on the converter chips for IDE) and therefore suitable for external HD, DVD etc.

Ouch! I didn't know, that the high speed mode must be supported by SW... Then I hope it will be supported soon :-)

One more question, when I transfer data by the USB, it usualy doesn't go over 80 kilos per second... so it looks, like it's low speed (1.5 Mbit) instead of full speed (12 Mbit). Is this only a question of options?

    Bye, MarK.

Poseidon *does* support USB 2.0. However, there is just no ehci device driver available.

If you need to use a fast drive (HD, CD, DVD, DAT...) use IDE, SCSI or
SATA (when supported) and remember USB means Universal Sucking Bus :-D
so forget it for anything else than floppy drive, kayboard and mouse,
keys, low end scanners and PDAs)

for anything else, SCSI, Firewire or IDE should be the way to go...

Yes, I know firewire is not supported...
/me find more urgent to implement firewire, than to have EHCI driver

Not so true, the USB 2.0 drives out are quite good. I have tested a few DVD-R drives on my Macs with great results. Some are even faster then the Firewire 400 found on a lot of systems still.

Well, FireWire is just better than USB 2.0. However, it's less popular.

/me find a lot of easier to code an EHCI driver, than the whole FireWire stack/class/driver...
