    I am just curious:

The AOs4 ports are Xmame ports.
    (based on X-Window/Unix Version)

The MOS Version is called mame (without X)

Is this an inaccuracy or is it realy based on
    non X- Source.

xMame, xMess etc are based on SDL.

Xmame has many display modes (xv, plain x11,..) or SDL, or even OpenGL (with or without SDL).

Mame Morphos is based on the official mame sources and uses native os functions for display, sound, builtin gui and so on, and has nothing to do with xmame, hence its name (although xmame is 99% based on official sources too, obviously).

It would be funny to compile xmame for morphos, to compare the performances, though. :)

i think mame is really fast (just keep old versions too). I can play almost all my games in fullspeed on the Peg2/G4 (MetalSlug3 with full 60fps even on the peg1). Only very few games are running a bit slow, e.g. SoulEdge. But even that is almost playable :)

    SoulEdge on Peg2/G4

(i hope altivec can improve here a little bit, 30fps + sound would be cool IMHO)

    regards,

    Tokai:
Beeing a total Emu Freak since years, I also did various tests with mame vs. specialized emulators on my Win PC. And the difference is sometimes realy amazing. In fact Mame is a somewhat bloated beast, not only for the exe size ( I never saw such a big exe on my Amiga or Peg before ;-))

And it got slower and slower from release to release ( I still get headache when I remember the time i tried various ppc mame versions on my Cyberstorm PPC Amiga, when I did a part of the Emulator Review for Amigaplus)

On the other Hand you will never be able to play that much Arcade Games like it is possible with mame. And as you allready mentioned, even my Peg 1 is fast enough to play most of the games. But the point is, this is just possible with the work Fab did here, for example the overlay feature helped much to gain speed and still have higher resolutions.
Btw, this is even more true for Mess. If I remebmer correct, Fab told me once that he had to frameskip when it come to the Sega Genesis Emu, which worked even on my old A4k PPC without Frameskip using Generator.

To make the long short, my Experience is, specialised Emulators are allways faster then mass Emulators like Mame or Mess.

Port Xmame is really easyier than a base MAME port, because you can use for Xmame the SDL subset.
This, altrough, lead to SLOW performances versus standard Mame ports.
This can be checked also on PC where the difference between the SDL Xmame use and standard Mame is around 10% ... 10% on a Athlon Xp 2500.
This differnce will be MORE noticable on our processors.
Better continue on the good linear Mame port :-D
