    Hi,

I am more than happy MorphOS user. I have some troubles in accessing it but that's another story. Alas I live in a wifi range, the said network is free (which makes it my choice) and it's an open network.

Thus I was forced to get some EDIMAX appliance (proven working with Pegasos already) catching the signal and delivering it for morphos via rj-45. No big deal at all, I was happy the proven workaround existed.

But now, I want that thrash out of my house :-) The fewer stuff at home, the better (to manage etc. see: wife). Some extra HW expense was made but to, me MorphOS was extremely cheap anyway since I had a mac at that time already - just the license plus the appliance. Just check out most recent Sam offer, man, just don't check the specs, just check the bargain, man...

But as I said, I wish that thing would go away :-) So not sure how much it costed, not sure really from my memory, say 20 Eur. So I am ready to pledge 15 Eur for a speed-up bounty, call it, that makes OPEN WiFI a feature list on NEXT MorphOS release. As far as I remember, one more guy wanted it also, the guy named pampers probably.

Well? Anyone else wired his/her mini unnecessarily?
Was: Mac Mini PPC running MorphOS 2.4
Now: Amiga Forever 2010 with AmiKit and AmigaSYS
Not used: Icaros Desktop 1.2 (reason: no wifi)
    Planned soon: an OS4 system
Shortly then: a MOS notebook (wifi is a must-have)

I am 100% with you. I moaned about this in several previous threads. Would be willing to pledge as well.

EDIT: my WiFi is open but I don't broadcast the SSID and I have MAC address filtering, so this would work for me perfectly.

Sure that I would like it. As far as I remember MorphOS Team specified that WIFI support won't happen before PowerMac version of MorphOS.

Anyway, our bounty system seems to be absolutely dead. It's quite sad because I would like to ask for few apps but I even have no chance to open new bounty. From the existing one we can see, that the interest is hmm... there is almost no interest.

But of someone will open bounty for WiFi support, I'll be there for you baby ;)

Well, let's open it then! It does not mean if the bounty system appears dead that this would be a dead bounty. Maybe someone will pick it up. It is for sure just a couple of clicks for the webmaster or someone who administers the bounties page...

We need a spec though, but I think something along the following lines would be enough: "Implement support for WiFi on MacMini. Only open networks need to be supported (no WAP or any security)." Give it deadline of 2.5 or a patch to be released in, say, 2-3 months...

Three of us means already EUR 50 so... Especially if the support is already planned, this money could just push it maybe even into 2.5 but in the limited form (and we would be OK with that).

    Chime in...

I think they even said it won't happen before PowerBook or iBook version of MorphOS.

    It's enough...

EDIT: I have devices that don't support encryption (old Nintendo DS and other stuff). I know I can have multiple networks but too much hustle... Monitoring logs of course... no problems or intrusions for >7 years in this setup in my neighborhood...

Hiding SSID avoids 90% of "hacking" attemps (ocasionally users going by, and trying to connect)... MAC filtering, avoids 99% of then (only someone that really want to go in will go in)... It might be cracked eyes closed, but anything is completely secure. If that kind of security fits his needs, is more than enough.

You can leave your car locked in your garage, and it might be stolen. You can leave your car totally opened in the botton of the pacific ocean, and it is unlikely to get stolen...

Anyway, wifi support would be nice... a bounty might be good.

Really no 100%? Is there really chance to connect, without knowing an allowed MAC address? The WiFi setup of my company is exactly as Mihailod's, just because we have some old terminals that can only connect to non authenticated nor encrypted SSIDs.

I guess you mean "nothing". Indeed, I agree with you. Perceiving something as completely secure IS the real danger ("la gente va a calz?n quitao").
Excuse that spanish language intrusion. Actually, it came through a hacked WiFi device :-D .

sorry boys but MAC filtering is also very easily hackable, not more difficult than finding a "how to" on the web. I won't post links here, but it's easy to find tutorials about how to bypass MAC filtering.

The most secure is still WPA2, which is hackable but takes time... so most hackers would just not bother and find another more easily hackable spot. I do't think it's worth having wifi on morphOS without wpa2 implementation.

Sorry to burst some bubbles but WiFi for MorphOS with all the bells and whistles won't happen anytime soon, neither for MorphOS 2.5, nor close to any (possible) PowerBook MorphOS release.
I doubt that anyone would reject it once it's there but unfortunately there is noone i know of who is working on it. Starting a bounty or some claims that a notebook with an ethernet wire is useless is unlikely to change that.
It's just a hell lot of work to get that done (even if limited to the broadcom apple stuff and even though there are reference implementations by now). And believe me, I know what I'm talking about .....

Thanks for the support, pal. Next time I'm about to come up with something alike, I'll remember that.

Anyway I see no much problem.

WiFi for MorphOS is two parts:
    - without any security
    - WEP/WPA2

So that's just a part of the work. Also it is said to happen "no earlier than on first Apple notebook release". Sure, I'm glad but that's not likelly MOS 2.5, possibly 2.6 or 2.7 etc. So consider it scheduled around 2011/2012. I would pay not to wait that much.

And as in AmigaOS case, Friedens broders, core AOS4 developers took a Firefox aka Timberwolf bounty and it kindda works.

So by this bounty I expect that the MOSTeam developer responsible for WiFi might pick the bounty up, if the money talks enough, so that he or she can do partially what he/she is supposed to do eventually anyway. But in this case, for extra money just for the speedup.

    EDIT* clarification

I won't describe the work because by doing that, I would make the actual work easier, right?

I'll define the features wanted instead. The task is to enable MorphOS 2.4 (and higher) to be able to connect to the internet using IEEE 802.11b/g interface, being an open network (unlike WEP, unlike WPA, unlike cert etc.) The feature is limited to Mac Mini WiFi adapter but also, to all other built-in Mac adapters, where MorphOS is supported at the time of the bounty start/end.

So jacadcaps's statement from August 2009 isn't valid any more?

"A WiFi driver isn't planned for the first mac Mini release [...]. We'll surely add one before releasing a PowerBook / iBook version where it is a must-have ;)"

    AROS?guys have done something similar:
    http://www.power2people.org/bounty_054.html

IMHO it's better to support firstly some generic USB wireless device instead of the built in broadcom chip because it would allow all MorphOS users to use usb wifi too

It's done already what you say. I was adviced here that EDIMAX EW-7206APg was tested with Pegasos so that's the one I'm using now.

Actually the purpose of this thread was to enable Apple WiFi in morphos, starting from the Mini and spanning thru next models, no matter the time when support reaches some Notebook. I'd known it's a tough rocket to do that's why I suggested a bounty. I'll have no troubles in selling my appliance for 15 Eur and giving it to a person, most likely the MosTeam member so that WiFi in Mac models gets closer (unrestricted access for the time being).

I think it is fair enough.

On the mini example; I got myself a dvi2svideo adapter so mini is partially portable while it can be attached to a TV set via that. It is important to give the chance to Mac MorphOS users to travel with the mac, keyboard and mouse plus this converter, knowing that they can use open wifi at their destination. MorphOS gets more mobile by that :-)

In fairness i would like to see WIFI on my MacMini running (via Airport of course). But there is a solution to get that done with access point which you Diskdoctor and me are using at the moment. The is also the ethernet working so we are able to get WIFI or the internet somehow. I would prefer to see bounty on something that doesn't exist at all as cairo with HW support so we can have proper Flash plugin for OWB. That would be more important to me. It's just my point of view.

We can open a bounty for WIFI, I'll put money on it. But if Morphos Team confirmed that it will come at some stage, let's put the money for something else..

There is a quote some four posts backward, someone (jacadcaps?) stated that "WiFi is a must-have while on a notebook". But it doesn't tell much. We'll have at least one boxed Apple model in between, maybe two. Assuming six-nine months per single HW specs, we're with the wifi "most likely", in some 10-24 months.

I agree there are more important stuff. I appreciate that. But maybe it's better to create some MorphOS features'-related funds to speed stuff up. I myself have no expectations about MorphOS features, let the river flow in its pace. Maybe except for PyMUI documenting :-) But anyway I really wish to sell this EDIMAX back and give this money to MorphOS team. It costs me nothing. I hope more people might be in a similar situation.
