    Hi

What do you think about opening bounty for a FireFox port for MorphOS? Worth of trying?

No, resources would probably be better spent on development of other applications.

I like this webbrowser. The other reason is that if AOS users will have it, why not MOS users ;) But it's not a something i cannot live without.

I'm also interested in sftp gui client, there is one bounty but there is no interest in that one :(

For what do you need Firefox?
We have OWB and it is fast and stable.
And it has a plugin in interface too.
Wait for a offical swcdec release and hardware accelerated libcairo,
then there is no need for firefox at all.

And yes, upgrading AmiTradeCenter with sftp and fix some bugs would be cool :)

I agree with the majority here. There's nothing Firefox does that OWB does not once it gets flash support. At least, nothing too important that'll change the netsurfing experience much. The plugin api is there and maybe (I've no idea if it's doable) Fab could make it firefox compatible and if not he'd come up with his own versions of the most popular FFox plugins. I'd also argue that the Friedens would be better off enhancing OWB for OS4.1 to bring it to MOS OWB standards than starting a whole new project. But that's just me.

It was a surprise to hear that the Friedens were working on a Firefox port. I hope they make it and that they do it in a way that MorphOS and AROS too can benefit from the open source development.

Well, they have been pretty clear that they will keep it as "unportable" as the license permits - otherwise they could have just used Amizilla (which requires fully open source)

Porting Firefox would lead to years of porting while OWB will keep growing in the meanwhile, i see no interest in it.
I'd like to see some new bounties though, like Cairo, AMP (Apache MySQL Php), and more ressources assigned on the GTK-MUI.

You really think a Firefox port would automagically have Flash support and hardware accelerated UI?

A ported Firefox as is wouldn't have Flash support either.

    > The plugin api is there and maybe (I've no idea if it's doable) Fab could make it

AFAIK it's NPAPI compatible as well already. But that doesn't change the fact that plugins must be ported, which is only possible for open source ones.

    > and if not he'd come up with his own versions of the most popular FFox plugins.

Which ones would that be apart from Flash? Java?

The sake of using a special operating system (also, on a special computer) comprises using special applications, and be ready to accept possible limitations.
I'd take a native MorphOS application over a simple port any day, even if it has less functions. Those I might enjoy by investigating different ways of doing things. That's what having fun with computers is about.
The oppossite is having "everything" neatly packed. Great for being productive. But for that, I already have a PC with Windows (at a fraction of the cost).
    Fun means implication.

That would be great! Is there any chance to add the one point on that bounty? The feature i will be looking for is editing a files straight on the server, without downloading them to the hard drive.

In the evening i'm gonna put some money on that.

I think Fab has done a fantastic job with OWB, its alredy a great browser, and with Java and Flash, it is complete! So, no need for wasting time on Firefox now when OWB is so good.
Consentrate on Flas and java for OWB and drivers for the mac mini wifi card ;-), I want wireless!

Fab said that there is no chance that flash plugin will work with proper speed without Cairo. So what are waiting for, let's open that bounty then.

I don't see Java on MorphOS anytime soon.

    > So, no need for wasting time on Firefox now when OWB is so good.

For the 3rd time in this thread: A Firefox port wouldn't mean having Flash or Java automatically as this is 3rd party software by all means.

    > Consentrate on Flas and java for OWB

I don't see anyone concentrating on Java for MorphOS.

Porting Cairo is trivial job really. Fab has been using it long time already. What there is missing is cairo.library which got stuck on my HD because my Pegasos died two days ago.

Yeah, seems like it's been there already for some 4 years:

    https://morph.zone/modules/news/article.php?storyid=900

And it's in OWB according to news item:

    @ Itix

Ouch - bad luck, sorry to hear about your Pegasos failure. But hopefully your HD didn't die with that Pegasos failure... Should be rather easy to retrieve that data from the Peg's hdd (like getting a 3.5" usb case and attach that one to your spare MorphOS maschine).

    @ thread
Regarding a FF port. I don't see a big step forward with FF over OWB. FAb really did a great job with his port and enhancements. I doub't FF will offer that much more (some ppl may like some FF extensions though). I guess resources are better spent on improving the existing apps.

Yes, but the question was IIRC not a Cairo Port but a *hardware accelerated* Cairo port.

You think that itix meant an hardware accelerated Cairo is a trivial job? Hmm, maybe. Then I'd have misunderstood him.
