I have just read a new post about MUI classes being on OS4Depot.
When I installed my Peg2 finding the latest MUI classes was a pain as they are all scattered all over the internet.
I still have to do this on a regular basis when installing new programs.

What about a bounty to have a automatic software update (a la Windows or OSX) that would for a starter check for new MUI classes, dl them from a trusted site and update them ?
The bounty could have a section for maintenance costs such as the mail bounty. Maybe the server zone can be hosted on Morphzone.

    Any thoughts ?

It can be also extended for updating Reggae classes. They are available from a centralized resource already.

That sounds a great idea, because MUI classes update very often, so it's very annoying to download manually MUI classes every time.

A last example is TextEditor MUI class. In 3 days from 15.13 went 15.16 version ;-)

Texteditor.mcc update from 15.15 to 15.16 fixed one important bug in OS3 version but didnt affect MOS version at all.
    1 + 1 = 3 with very large values of 1

A good example why you should probably avoid fully automated updates :)

good idea, but I think Packaged updates is a better concept than auto due to reasons expressed here..

i suppose, there should be option for this, like auto update/custom update/manual update... and there should be also something like detailed description of differencies between the installed and the new version... ofcourse optional :-) and this would be very helpful not only for mui classes, but also for datatypes, libraries, devices, handlers, filesystems etc etc etc, there should be a library for this reason, so that everyone could use it for his software updates... it should be unified...

    bye, MarK.

I don't want to be a buzzkill, but racing off to have files "automated" may not always be a good idea.

    case in point:

I recently downloaded 3 mui files from aminet. I installed them (the ones' labled for MOS) on my peg. all seemed fine until I tried starting up April (1.138).

April opened but I was unable to right-click the prefs as is normal. hmmmm. I mean, not being able to access the dates and the prefs makes it useless. except as a pretty pic on my wb.

Because I knew which files i had recently included in my system, I proceded to - one by one - rename and reboot, seeing which mui file was the one messing with April.

    turns out TextEditor.mcc ver 15.16
    TextEditor.mcp ver 15.11
    was the issue.

    I returned using TextEditor.mcc 15.11
    and it works just fine.

I can't say what the problem is, but that is for others (who understand programming) to discover.
Anyway, let's not be so quick to want everything automatic. it's too early for that. we still need to make baby steps with this work.

    Cecilia,
We are very aware about this kind of issues.
Having complete automatic update won't be the default.
(You can check the bounty page EZPM / Morphup.)
The user will be prompted, installation will be loged and the older file will be saved.
Un-installation from the GUI may be something to consider next (for a single package or maybe something alike the Windows system restore with checkpoints).

cdfr, thanks. I'm certainly not implying anyone is being "dumb" about this.
I just figured i'd 'kill two birds with one stone' by reporting a little problem i JUST discovered at the same time i'd make a point about this topic.

I never thought you were implying anyone is being dumb.
I just want to make clear that we want all the safeguards possible.
It is not Windows, we want to know what is going on with our system.
