PowerMac G5 bounty - update

While bounties seem to be rather en vogue, I think it could be a good thing to outline a bounty for an AMP solution (library + developer documentation) for MorphOS. I think Krashan provided quite some input on that regard already and also has a proven ability to write pretty understandable documentation. Dunno if he has time and motivation to do such a thing, but I would appreciate that as there are pretty many multiprocesor machines out there (more to come with the G5 thing). Of course it should not collide with the team's plans (but since he's part of the team, he should know).

I'm awaiting for an infomation from AmigaDave about 1st G5 shipped.

Btw. Scored nice G5 2.7Ghz today for myself :)

Sorry for the delay in posting to this thread.

The first G5 PowerMac was shipped out from California, USA to South Africa on Tuesday, November 6th, through the U.S. Postal Service with insurance, via Express Mail, which should only take between 6 to 10 days to arrive at it's destination.

See the separate thread I started (sorry, I should have put the updated information in this thread instead), regarding the shipment of G5 PowerMac computers to South Africa.

Support for higher resolution? You won't be able to go more than native resolution of your PB :)

Now that multicpu/core machines are available that would make a lot of sense if Krashan and/or bigfoot are interested.

Agreed. Given that MorphOS has been released for multi-CPU hardware as long as 2.5 years ago, I'd really like to see it eventually offering the possibility for software to make use of more than just one CPU/core.

It sure would be nice to eventually have the external DVI output working on the G4 PowerBook's that are currently supported by MorphOS3.1, so we could use an external larger monitor, or specially for using external projector's for presentations at shows, like AmiWest in the USA and the several Amiga and MorphOS shows that take place in Europe each year.

I have not heard about such support of the external DVI port on any of the supported G4 PowerBook's even being worked on yet, so I am not sure if we will ever have such support. Even if it is planned for the future, I would guess that it is a low priority feature, when compared to other graphic features, like 3D support for the Radeon video cards based on the R300 series graphic chips, and other video features that I cannot think of at the moment.

Regarding BigFoot's comments (or was it someone else's comments) about the fact that the recent bounties for 3D support of the R300 based video cards, and support for the G5 PowerMac(s) being work that would have eventually been completed anyway, without the addition of any bounties, I hope that these two bounties do not set a precedence and act as negative influences on the rest of the MorphOS Development Team, so that they want, or expect further bounties to happen to speed up more work on future features of MorphOS3.x.

We have read many times that money is not the determining factor for most, or all of the MorphOS Development Team, when it comes to speeding up development times, because almost all of the Development Team work full time jobs and have only limited time that they can work on MorphOS3.x and money does not motivate Team members to take time away from their families and friends, to spend more time than they already devote to coding for MorphOS3.x.

I am in favor of the recent bounties, and of future bounties for specific features that may be needed, but I do have this slight concern that more bounties may cause problems between some of the members of the MorphOS Development Team, who are not receiving, or asking for bounty monies, and those who are not, or that it may cause some of them to expect additional bounty money, to speed up development times.

At least it's been said to be:

"There is no support for arbitrary resolutions on the external vga/dvi monitor connector for PowerBooks yet. This will be addressed in a future update of MorphOS3."

it would make sense that the same resolution is used in all outputs of the graphic card as it shouldn't impact much current CGX drivers.

True, but as far as I understand what amigadave wrote, he wants to use other resolutions for external displays than the internal one. Else he could use the mirrored display method that's already working with MorphOS for his needs (larger monitor, projector), couldn't he?

You are linking yourself (again) but did u read and understand Geit's statement?

Anyway, i don't get all the negativity at all about bounties. As it was said G5 port maybe would appear sooner or later but I remember actually how hard was to convince Bigfoot into that and I think he is still mad about me ;)

Don't fool ourselves and don't look for a problems where they don't exist.

I could have linked to the original German comments on amiga-news.de but I don't think you understand German that well.

    > did u read and understand Geit's statement?

Yes and yes, and so did amigadave. Btw, being German I can assure you that the quoted Google translations are surprisingly good :-)

Yeah, I remember well what he said about the feasibility of a G5 port some years ago :-)

Huh? Dou you mean to address me with this?

Then I guess it was a good decision to give you the link to my posting with the English translations instead of linking to the German original comments :-)

    > What are you trying to say Andreas?

I was telling you in posting #63 where amigadave got "that comments" from that you were referring to in posting #61. Then in posting #66 I kindly answered the question you asked me in posting #65. Furthermore, I asked you a question about a strange request of yours, which I would really like to have answered.

    > Can you please state that in understable english please?

As you can see, I tried. Was my English understandable enough for you?

Well, that's unfortunate then. I'm afraid I can't explain what I wrote any clearer.

If you want to know, I suggest you directly ask those you think are causing or spreading this negativity ...or you could always simply ignore them.

No, that is not what I meant. If mirrored display mode is already working from the external DVI port on the G4 PowerBook, then I have missed when it was released. A mirrored display output would allow me to do presentations using my G4 PowerBook with a projector during the AmiWest Shows.

I have not been keeping a close watch on recent news about MorphOS3.x since last November, so it is quite possible that support for a mirrored display using the external DVI port on the G4 PowerBook was released without me knowing about it.

If the DVI port on the G4 PowerBook is now working, it would be more useful if it could output different resolutions than only the native resolution of the built-in LCD screen, so we could set the DVI port to output the native resolution of what ever monitor we connected to, instead of having to scale the image to fit the external monitor size.

    @pampers,

Not sure why you are angry with my previous message and calling it "bullshit". I am only expressing my own opinion and concern that too many bounties might cause some problems between MorphOS Development Team members, if a few of them are getting bounty money, and the rest of them are doing MorphOS development for free during the time they have to do coding, when they are not working at their regular jobs. Also, it might be bad for a commercial operating system to become dependent upon bounty monies for certain parts that should already be planned within the operating system, when registration fees are being collected to fund further work on the OS.

My opinion and concerns may be trivial and there may be no problem or jealousy between any of the MorphOS Development Team members. Without knowing more about the individuals within the Team, I cannot know how well they get along with each other, or how each one of them feels, or thinks about the recent bounties.

The only reason I expressed my opinion, was to warn users against creating too many new bounties in the future, for things that have already been announced as part of the future plans for MorphOS3.x. I support bounties in general, and also strongly support MorphOS Development Team members getting paid for their time and work contributed toward making new features within MorphOS3.x possible. I try to support all third party MorphOS programmers as well, by purchasing any new software that they develop, plus promoting their work to other users.

If you think by expressing my opinions, I am being negative toward bounties, then you are jumping to the wrong conclusions, as that could not be further from the truth.

AFAIK, it's been supported since June 2012 when PowerBook support was introduced. See also this statement from before the release:

I know that the DVI port on the G4 PowerBook did not work when support was first introduced, and I have not read (but could have missed) any change regarding such support, so I will continue to assume that there is still no support for external monitors from the DVI port on the G4 PowerBook's, until I read a report from someone who has it working on their G4 PowerBook, or see it for myself on my own G4 PowerBook.

Not having a working external DVI port on the supported G4 PowerBook's prevented me from being able to do a presentation during the 2011 AmiWest Show, where I was forced into using my G4 MacMini instead, to do the demonstration of the beta version of MorphOS3.0.

I hope that this feature has been completed, or will soon be finished, so I can use my G4 PowerBook to do a presentation at the 2013 AmiWest Show, using the projector on a large screen, or the wall of the presentation hall where the show is taking place.
