    Anyone

I have noticed when I open my HDD "MorphOS" by double clicking on the HDD icon where MorphOS is installed I often don't see the files in the drawers. And often they are greyed so you can't access them

On the other hand when use "Volumes / My MorphOS" (the icon with the butterfly in the empty aquarium), then I can see more files in the drawers and also open files programs that is greyed in the other view.

This is a bit odd for me as a new user. I'd like to get it explained - why it is like that?

    Thanks for clarifying

This suggests you have just different vievmodes set for "My MorphOS" and for "MorphOS" volume. I assume that both views are in icon mode, but you have "show all files" active for "My MorphOS".

In MorphOS icons for files are not generated, but are real files with ".info" extension. When "show all files" is inactive, you will see only files having real icons. If you turn "show all files" on, icons will be generated for files not having real ones, but Ambient will grey them out to show the difference. You can still access them, but many of them are not executables, so doubleclicking on them may have no effect. You can still delete/copy/move/rename them using RMB menu or drag&drop.

OK - Got it - Thanks! Seem for me I have to choose "SHOW ALL" in each new drawer I am entering when using the HDD "MorphOS".

Maybee all drawers in both "My MorphOS and MorphOS" should be set to default "Show all" for new users not to be confused? (Proposal for later releases,)

Note! - I am using the Chrysalis - don't know if that has anything to do with this?

Another funny thing is that the bottom text in the windows for MyMorphOS and MorphOS is in french: "o bytes dans 25 répertoire(s) et 24 fichier(s)...

Not sure if this language issue is related to an error in MorphOS or Chrysalis Pack?

    Regards / Tomas

The language error is caused by the Chrysalis pack. Papi should provide you with the correct file to replace.

Your MorphOS partition (assuming it has a real disk.info icon) is probably snapshot in Icon/Icons mode. You can snapshot it in icon (or list)/all mode.

For partitions/drawers that aren't snapshot, there's a default view type/mode option in ambient settings -> window. You can choose there whether you want a view to open in icon or list mode, and if thumbs, icons or all files should be shown by default.

The following explanations by boot_wb should contain solutions for this:

    Hi Guys,

I am still stuck with the MorphOS HDD select icon view instead of Select all by default. And it does it for every subsequent drawer I open and it doesn't store my latest choise.

I tried to choose list all and then right click the HDD symbol and choose "snapshot" - did not solve the issues.
I read the links from Andreas . they where covering many topics but I couldnt find the solution
I opened ambient window and it is already selected there list and select all as default and also "inherite" but still the problem remains.

(On MyMorphos it works as I want though)

Any other advise to make "show all" permanent default for my MorphOS HDD?

    Thanks a lot

What kind of icon does your morphos partition have (you can upload it somewhere if needed).
Alternatively, you can delete/rename its disk.info file and see how the situation changes.

NB - Disk.info can only be seen in list view (thumbnails, or all files), not icon view. (Or can be listed/deleted/renamed from the cli)

@Fab - the icon is the chrysalis HDD icon with butterfly for the MorphOS HDD on the desktop.

@All - I can shift to select all manually and it works fine. Issue is I need to do it every time and for every subsequent drawer on the MorphOS HDD.
Whilst in comparance, for the "MyMorphoS" icon (butterfly in empty aquarium) it is always "select all" by default.

Well, it is very simple here. Let's do it step by step.

    1. I assume you want to have icon view + show all files in Ambient window opened after doubleclicking system disk icon on the desktop. On my system it is named "System" :-).

    2. You have to check if the disk has its own icon file. It is named "Disk.info". You can check for its existence from a shell (issuing list System:Disk.info command for example).

    3. If the file is there, open lister by clicking on disk icon. Then switch view mode to icons + show all files. Then press RMB over window bar and select Snapshot -> Window.

That's all. From now Ambient window for this disk will show all files. What to do if there is no "Disk.info"? You can make one. Icons on MorphOS are just renamed PNG images. Choose some image of reasonable (less than 96 x 96 pixels) size, rename it to Disk.info and you are done. Alternatively you can "borrow" an icon in the following way. Press RMB over your disk icon, select Information. A window opens. Then drag any other icon (from desktop, or from any Ambient window) and drop it over icon image in information window. Then press Save.

Just an extra-note that could interest some users: there's more to know regarding deficons for volumes that don't have their own disk.info.

If a volume (let's say hd1) doesn't have its own disk.info file, Ambient will attempt to load from deficons path def_hd1disk.info, then def_hdxdisk.info (pattern matching any hd0 to hd9 device) and finally def_disk.info.

To be noted that if the deficon for the device exists (def_hd1disk.info in this case), the volume can actually be snapshot, and the position/dimensions/mode information will be stored in that icon.

This can be handy in particular for removable drives coming from other OSes (usb, firewire hard disks, smb shares, whatever).

    Sorry.
I actually do not have disk.info
I have a .info file which is the icon for the drive.
If I made a disk.info file what would it be an icon for?

It would be an icon for the volume it resides on.
