    STATUS/ SOLUTION UPDATE

How to get Youtube to run Smoothly in OWB (for newbees)

    1. Go to: http://www.youtube.com/html5 (to activate html5)

    2. Download the plugin SWFDEC at this address: http://fabportnawak.free.fr/owb/plugins/swfdec_plugin-1.2.lha
    - .lha format needs to be unzipped/uncompressed (double click the file)
    - The destination you must use for the unzipped content is: applications:OWB:Plugins (Application drawer and then OWB drawer and the Plugin Drawer)

    3. Download the latest OWB scripts at this address: http://fabportnawak.free.fr/owb/scripts/
    - Place the scripts in the drawer Applications:OWB:Scripts
    - Overwrite existing files if the same already exist

    4. Start OWB and go to the menu "Windows" and choose the dropdown "URL settings"
    - add www.youtube.com, select to spoose it as either Safari or iPad (it will give different looks on youtube layout)

    5. Go to menu "Windows" and choose the dropdown "Scripts" and disable Youtube "EZ download" script if you like to get rid of the partly annoying overlay for downloading videos.

    Enjoy smooth streaming videos

You're mixing 3 distinct ways of viewing Youtube videos:

    A) Using OWB's HTML5 player via script turning Flash into HTML5, involving your:
    - step 2 (plugin is not used per se but is needed for the script to get something to convert to HTML5)
    - step 3 (YouTube.js)

    B) Using Youtube's HTML5 standard player, involving your:
    - step 1 (not even needed for me)
    - step 3 (YouTube_Fullscreen_Fix.js for full-window mode)
    - step 4 (spoof as Safari, it's not necessary for me but some have reported it has been for them)

    C) Using Youtube's HTML5 mobile player, involving your:
    - step 4 (spoof as iPad)

    @Andreas -

I dont care if it is mixing techniques. I just wanted to sum up a list the actions that I have taken based on various proposals. And it know works exellent for me. Pehaps a good idea to mixing the techniques then?

Then you may want to continue ignoring what I write and just stop reading my post here :-)

    > I just wanted to sum up a list the actions that I have taken based on various proposals.

Those proposals were from different individuals using distinct ways to view Youtube videos. It just makes no sense to mix the required actions to use them.

    > And it know works exellent for me. Pehaps a good idea to mixing the techniques then?

There's no need to mix anything. I pointed out all 3 possible ways and what to do for each of them. So for any "newbees" who don't want to blindly follow a "solution" but instead want to know why what they do works the way it does I recommend not to follow your steps the way you gave them.

@Andreas - dont get me wrong. I am very thankful for all help - specially what you provide Andreas has been extremely helpful and useful. And I also think it is correct that you explain that this is different techniques, It was wrong that I responded like "I don'care" - You are right it is better we know what we do than follow blind solutions. Sametime I think it is important I do my part and Sum Up what I did to make it work for me as "giving back" to anyone reading the tread and is, like me, new to MorphOS.

I am not claiming my solution is correct, I am just wrapping what I did to make it work for me based on the various advises I got, otehrwise when reading the tread later no one will know what I actually did in the end with all the advices. So I write what I did and how I made it work for me.

Thanks again everyone who contributed with advises :-)

I can't see the way to use Youtube's HTML5 mobile player by spoofing as iPad mentioned there. The other 2 ways are explained there, yes.

I think this Forum and all contributions is fantastic. It could however be helpful, and worth it to consider expanding the library with the most FAQ's of topics solved here and in various places?

I guess it is a matter of mainting it but on the other hand it can evolve by itself gradually, without unrealistic requirements?

    I use B with C as a fallback.

    I'd suggest B and A as fallback.
B (youtube's HTML5 player) is nice to have if you need closed captions or additional options.
    A works in all cases.

I don't trust too much the ipad version (C), because it used to have some glitches in controls.

Also to be noted B can be a bit slower in non overlay (fullscreen) mode, due to additional scaling and transparency effects. A alone is slightly faster and works in all cases.

The iPad version is changing the layout of the webbpage. I think it is responsive design so it is different than Safari spoofing. (good to know)

the simpliest way is to read the readme and add youtube.js userscript. :)

    > You can also convert youtube to a more common format to play on OWB.
    > See: http://www.ilikemall.com/how-to/convert-flv-to-mp4-mac.html

The information on that website is bogus. Youtube doesn't provide videos only as FLV but also as MP4 (the format the software offered on the site outputs to) and WebM. So why not use MorphOS to download the video in MP4 format directly from Youtube? Besides, I wouldn't play a downloaded video in OWB but rather in MPlayer. Furthermore, relying on Windows or Mac software to eventually watch a video on MorphOS isn't something I'd consider worthwile.
