    Hey guys
Now that we have SATA drivers for Morphos... i"m interested in doing a clean install of Morphos 2.5 onto a SATA drive. Can this be done from the current installer and can we autoboot from SATA? Thanks

MorphOS itself can boot from a SATA system partition, but the Pegasos OpenFirmware can't reach a boot image on a SATA device. So you still need IDE (or netboot or whatever) for the boot img.

I don't remember if the pegasos openfirmware detect usb massstorage devices. I strongly suspect it doesn't.

@magnetic: You could use a CF-Card on the UDMA-Bus, just holding the MorphOS bootimage.

But that would have to be done by bplan, not by MorphOS Team.

Yep, but would be nice I guess. Although my IDE drive works fine.

I do have many problems with USB keyboards on my Peg-2, it always types letters multiple times so I can't really type on it using USB keyboard.
    (in OF only).

I think the Efika "5K2" was the first...
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

There are SATA cards for macs which OF can boot from, maybe they would work in Peg if the chipsets are supported? Sonnet sells 'em.

    @thread
IMHO, the IDE2SATA adapter defeats the purpose of getting a SATA drive, which is improved speed over cheaper per GB. I mean, SATA II has 6GB/s bandwidth, versus ~200mb/s or so for IDE? This is why we need more tower models :)
    My Macs:
    Powerbook G4 ALU 1.5GHZ 15" 1.5GB OSX.5.8
    Powermac G4 MDD 1.5GHZ OSX.5.8 MOS2.7

Want a part for a Mac? Let me know, I'll see what I can do.

Amithlon is amazing, questions and help I can provide.

You're confusing specifications with implementations of specifications. OpenFirmware is just a specification (IEEE 1275-1994), whereas Pegasos's SmartFirmware and PPC Mac's Firmware are different implementations of the OpenFirmware specification with different capabilities and extensions. Thus, PPC Mac's Firmware's capability to boot off SATA says nothing about Pegasos's SmartFirmware capability to do so.

    > SATA II has 6GB/s bandwidth, versus ~200mb/s or so for IDE?

No, SATA2 has 3 Gbit/s, which is 300 MB/s (because SATA2 bytes consist of 10 bits each). Pegasos II has ATA/100 which is 100 MB/s.

Are you sure It's better SATA via PCI 33mhz then IDE inside the Pegasos2, for bootstrap MorphOS volume ? ...

I'd like an update of Open Firmware 1.2 of Bplan ... not only for SATA PCI cards bootable, but also for exemple to use USB Apple keyboard alluminum (I can use with Peg2 rev 2B5 and last OF 1.2 "only" USB Apple keyboard white, in Open Firmware) ... and sure for other many useful things.

    Damn, when MorphOS 2.6 for PowerMac G4 MDD/firewire 800 :) I'm here ready form months :) :) :)

    regards

AFAIK the PCI slots and the southbridge share one and the same PCI channel on the MV64361.

Is there a good benchmark tool, utility for MorphOS to test I/O for SATA PCI vs PATA inside ?
