It seems that Ambient is abandonated by the author, David Gerber, so it seems time for other maintainer and some developers for that. I see a big problem the GPL license because being too restrictive, I think that is better other license like LGPL because it will cause less problems with programs using Ambient and others...

David Gerber, do you abandonate definitly Ambient? What about LGPL license or something?

GPL has nothing to do with "being abandonated".

I believe he's stated that if you want it under a different license he's prepared to do it - for $$$.

This is a fairly normal business model with GPL software.

Oli is right. GPL software (also called Free Software or Copyleft) is
NOT abandoned software. David Gerber keeps his rights to the code
while making it freely available to be modified and distrubuted as
long as the source code is available to anyone who wants it.

Richard Stallman, head of the Free Software Foundation and author of
the GPL and LGPL, does not believe the LGPL is a good license and
    discourages its use.

Aaron, I don't worry about what say a fanatical linux "profet" that thinks that all must be GPL and other bullshit like that... so why you say it as a good example? He simply sucks...

I prefer LGPL for ambient, apps using Ambient functions must be GPL if Ambient is GPL...

My point is that the author of the LGPL does not believe in the
license and does not believe that it would stand up in court if it
    were challenged.

This is not true. Applications that use Linux functions or GTK
functions does not have to be GPL (i.e. Opera, Pixel32, Papryus).

GTK is LGPL not GPL :-P
    http://directory.fsf.org/gtk.html

And the linux kernel is using a modifed version off the GPL, so you can write closed source program for linux.
if you donĀ“t believe me then ask Linus Torvalds
    :-P

What problem? I heard a rumour that zapek had agreed to have an "exception" for some libraries that would make it possible to use GPL licensed Ambient with closed source MorphOS.

The solution is to get as many people working on Scalos as we can for a quick, good working release! It has most of the features of Ambient and a few that Ambient is lacking even now for 68k. From what I have read its getting real close to working on MorphOS.
