Open sourcing MorphOS

    Heres an idea!

Open source MorphOS! How about a bounty of €50k to completely open source MorphOS. Just like Blender. Seems the only way to get away from the sleaze of Genesi. What do the developers say? What figure would be tempting. Or do we continue to struggle on? Lets be serious now, keeping MorphOS pegasos only is a silly idea. We need a colation. Make MorphOS run on everything PPC! The only way to go mainstream!

bplan should get hold of it. They make the board, they should also control the OS (for that board).

    1. bplan is the only part of Genesi still alive. (Just my guess ;) )
    2. MorphOS was developped by Ralph Schmidt. He is the owner.
I'd guess he wont open it. MOS can still be used as a small
    operating system for whatever devices.
    3. I'm sure that the development goes on.

So also Genesi USA has bplan/Ralph as shareholders besides bbrv, just like the to be closed Genesi S.à.r.l.?

Unlikely, indeed - especially since it would give Genesi for free what the morphos.net developers would like to get paid for.

Safe bet - it has been developed as a hobbyist project even in its hardest phase, the beginning, so it would be a big surprise if it wouldn't be continued now.

Agreed - without knowing the developer's plans and the complete picture, all these threads and ML discussions are obviously useless (except for showing the developers that we still care for this OS - but I think they do have noticed this meanwhile). Therefore I'd suggest we keep silent now and wait for an official statement by the MorphOS developers.

    @opi:

with broken keyboard you cannot log in to morphzone at all ;-) How to enter the password? Impossible. YOu could write the password in MorphED with the ascii table, but how to paste it into the loginbox when the keyboard does not work? ;-)

Well... and I'm not rich. I didn't eat for 3 days to save enough money to buy the new keyboard. I'm poor. :-D

It would be nice to see it go that way, but I would think we would get much better support and a more stable MorphOS if it were to stay closed. They just need to start charging for updates is all. We've all said we were willing to pay.

He's right, AROS on my Athlon64-3200+ with 1GB DDR400 RAM would be similar to a BMW M5 pissing all over a Citroen on the autobahn! ;-)

If a product such as MorphOS was opensourced, I cannot think of much good coming out of it. For proof, just look at Linux. yes, I have a Linux server at home running on a Pegasos 2, but can I say I like Linux? Definately NOT - I like MorphOS, it is *almost* Perfect for me the way it is (ie: doesn't need a lot more done on it).

To me a perfect OS is:

    - one which works in the way I like (ie: MorphOS does)
    - one which is NOT bundled with lots of junk I don't want *unless* they are optionally installed (ie: junk, like TCP/IP, Web Browser, Games, Utilities etc) - remember, some computer uses are not for Browsing the net or networking... don't assume everyone wants all their computers to be used like this.
    - one with is relatively bug-free
    - one which gets regular updates so that it runs on the latest hardware *OR* in which the *current* hardware has no intention of being phased out

but I think this software should be bundled, even you don't need it. Some SW is junk for you, but for others it might be pretty useful. But I agree to the other issues you pointed out.

why must the bundled software be bundled? why can't anyone who wants to make it make it?

I could argue that you guys are only thinking of yourselves (probably the majority), but I can argue I am thinking of myself (I bought MorphOS which happened to come with a Pegasos *after* I saw it running and played with it a bit, I liked it) and as far as I can see, rightfully so.

Most computers I have owned have *never* had operating system updates, it didn't stop me enjoying them. When I no longer want to use MorphOS, I'll search for another computer I like.

I think there is a beauty in simply inserting a CD-ROM, typing "copy cd0: dh0: all" and having a complete and fully working (but lean and bare bone) system set up, with all core things but nothing more. This is a nice Amiga tradition IMHO. Sure, I also believe that other things would be bundled as well (the more the better), but perhaps on an "Extras" disk. I'd like to see TCP/IP, Internet programs, tools and utilities, and lots of other things on that disk. This arrangement would make it possible for all users to set up a system just the way he/she wants it, in the true Amiga/MorphOS spirit, without being forced on to things they don't need or want which only will end up bloating the system.
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

I agree with everything you say there. I would never disagree about bundling anything including a TCP/IP stack. I disagree with making it part of the Operating System. There is a slight (important to me) distinction here. Windows for example has an inbuilt TCP/IP stack. I wouldn't expect software to be bundled (including TCP/IP stack), it is a bonus.
