I tryed Rdesktop today for the first time and I was very surprised.
Usualy I use VNC to control my Windows at office.
VVA does the job like a charme.
But today I discovered something realy good.
Redesktop opens a windows session and remotes it to my morphos. It's
    extremly fast compared to VNC.
Why does this speed diference exists?

Does Rdesktop the job realy diferently compared to VNC ?
VNC seems to do a complet screen copy, but Rdesktop seems to do
    another thing.

Can somebody explain how it works please?

RDesktop uses the Windows Terminal Server protocol so it only transfers a command like "open a window in the position x,y with the width wx,wy" and that only requires a few bytes. In contrast VNC transfers an entire bitmap of the active window or screen, something that requires lots of kilobytes.

I use Windows Terminal Server at work and it works smoothly but I've never tried it out on Amigas. How have you configured it? was it difficult to get it working?

With a little help from the guys on #morphos I got RDesktop to work.

The main thing I had to do was to give my account a password. Which is annoying.

The other thing I found (but apparently is unique to me!) is that when I log on to the PC via RDesktop on the Peg it logs the users off of my PC!!

    To explain that further:
With just one account set up on the PC when I log in via RDesktop on screen 1 (the Pegasos) the person on screen 2 (the PC) automatically logs out and screen 2 goes to the "Welcome" screen where it says "Bifford. Logged in". Therefore I cant use the PC ON screen 2, only screen 1 (RDesktop).

If I set up a second account then when RDesktop logs in via one account screen 2 throws up "Another user is trying to log on, you need to log off to let them do this. continue? yes/no" (or words to that affect).

So I can not it seems log on to the pc on both screen 1 and 2. Although I should be able to.

Oh, and for some reason RDesktop always brings the PC up in a small screenmode of 800x600 or similar. So the PC has a tiny desktop and I cant run games like Morrowind which need 24bit and a bigger screenmode.

Im hopeing to work through these "problems" because it looks to be a very nice program.

If you want to use your pc in real multiuser mode (une using directly the machine and another with rdesktop at same time) you need to install a fucking windows server version (2000 server, 2003, etc).
The winxp or 2000 isn't really multiuser

Bifford, you can specify screenmode you like, check rdesktop settings.

About sessions, as Doraemon told, this is limitation of winxp

The Windows Terminal Server extensions may be enough...

are you using XP home-edition or professional ?

AFAIK the home edition has more restrictions

I give you a trick: download TweakUI from internet and install it on your PC, it has a really usefull function. It can your PC do the 'autologin' everyone you boot so that you can avoid to manually type the pass! :-D

The original Windows VNC server didn't know about screen updates, so it kept polling the entire screen to find out what was updated. This was mighty slow. I suggest using RealVNC >=4.0 if you're using Windows as the server, and the machine you're connecting from is on the same LAN as the server.

Doraeman: any particular reason for swearing like that? I find it weird that microsoft have to release all these different versions of the same things. It's crazy! I can understand a single-user and a corporate (multi-user) version which to my mind would be identical except for the fact that the corporate version can be installed on a whole wadge of computers, and not just one.

For the record (and for Crumb) Im using the Proffesional version.

SCF - isnt the screenmode just what screenmode RDesktop displays ON? Not what screenmode it puts the PC desktop into?

    Miky060: I'll give that a go, tnx.

With Remote Desktop you can basically open a Windows session remotely. WinXP (Home) isn't supposed to support that but you can install WinConnect Server XP and you will be able to open up to 21 sessions...

Here it is a lot faster than any VNC client I have tried, even in 32bit/1024x768 with sound enabled... Opaque move is even usable with medium windows.

Unfortunately, while trying to play with settings/services, WinConnect Server XP won't work anymore on win side: so I can't do further tests...

Scroll wheel support and clipboard support are possible, but it will cost $. Are you willing to donate to get those features implemented?

    If so contact me privately.

I am not the programmer, but let's just say I organized the MorphOS port and put up money as did Genesi. We defined a specific set of features for the initial port that were included in the price. The programmer was fully paid for his work.

If we want more features implemented then it will cost more money. If you want to set up a bounty go ahead!

Personally I think Remote Desktop is an important application. I would like to see it bundled with MorphOS in the future. I believe connectivity with other networks and/or OS's is important.

Bundling a TCP/IP stack is very important as well, as is a modern and up-to-date web browser.
