i'll get my Zeta for x86 this week. Can't wait. BeOS is the best OS ever to be written, and Zeta is the NEW Generation BeOS.

Seeing Zeta on the Pegasos would just awesome.

It would be fantastic to have Zeta on the Pegasos. I thing BeOS is the best OS after MOS, and to see its successor to come back on a RISC CPU (like in the roots) would be fantastic!!
Why don't we organize a signature petition to send Yellow's Tab to convince them to do the porting? Otherwise they will never know there is interest on this OS from us.

even though i'm a Peggy user and love it. BeOS is FAR beyond MOS in almost every aspect. MOS has a LONG way to go to be able to compete with BeOS/Zeta. But i REALLY hope MOS will get there in the future. :-)

I thought I read that Zeta was going to switch to the OpenBeOS stuff when it's ready. If this is right, then -- bingo -- it'll be on the Pegasos. :-)

Slightly off-topic: Windows died on our funky Compaq so, looking around for something to install on it a couple of days ago, I found an old BeOS4.5 disc and did the 10-minute install. Man, it all came back: what a fun OS! Even though the graphic board isn't supported by that release, so we've only got a VESA screen, it's fun to use. My 8-year-old is having a good time running BeBounce and Flight, etc. Even the warnings and requesters have a unique style ("Graphic chips not supported. [] OK [] More information [] Don't nag"). And how many OS install discs include a song by the engineers' band? Yep, BeOS is a high-water mark as far as I'm concerned.

Actually I think I still have the Personal Edition download around somewhere -- or maybe I can get it from BeBits. But I have to check again about how to install it on an empty hard drive (not from inside Windows or Linux).

If anyone is interested in testing BeOS 5 they should get BeOS Max from the as it contains many updates, bugfixes and new drivers along with more applications than PE does. (and yes, it is also free as it is based on BeOS 5 PE)

I think this one's x86-only, it will definately not run on the Pegasos.

O.K. BeOS is not that bad, but don't forget to take a look at QNX.

QNX is a hard realtime system. You can't really compare it to a desktop OS.

QNX is really cool, but the graphical version wasn't really meant to be the next desktop platform but rather just give developers a simple way of working on the same platform as they are developing for.

You could do really cool things with QNX on a desktop, especially if you only want to run one or two applications really well. But in order for applications to take full advantage of the QNX platform they have to be designed with hard time constraints from the start, something very few desktop apps have.
