    Ha, one point for you. This information leads me to solution for this problem. It seems there is patch for such problems and it is included in debian 2.6.x patch set.

    Is a a GUI installer available yet for Gentoo on the Pegasos? The only time i used Gentoo was on the X-Box and i loved it. It was quite stable and worked well for the little Linux knowledge I have. I wouldnt know where to start on a console based install.

    Go here: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml

    ... and choose what version of the handbook you want to view (like the printable PPC version).

    Then click on the "Installing Gentoo" link and simply follow the instructions step by step! :-)

    Use the "Universal LiveCD".

    Get going with: boot cd /boot/pegasos root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc looptype=gcloop cdroot

    If your Pegasos is connected to Internet, you should, when you get to the stage where you are configuring the compile options, add ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~ppc" to /etc/make.conf before emerging the kernel. This will enable the very latest packages, and with that, things like the Gigabit Ethernet among other things.

    Of course, this info (and more) is available on David Holm's website:
    http://dev.gentoo.org/~dholm/ppc.html
    MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
    MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

    What about network installation? That first downloads a minimal set for compile and install the latest things :)

    @takemehomegrandma:
    Thanks for the quick guide and the support :)

    @morgoth:
    Thanks for the fix. I have added it to pegasos-dev-sources-2.6.8.1-r1 which should reach the mirrors within the hour.

    2.6.8 for Debian is here, as always, and will no doubt be in the Debian apt repositories pretty soon.

    timofonic, do you realise that EVERY question you asked has a quick answer in the freely available and well-linked documentation on the subject?

    I installed gentoo some time ago on my peg 1
    and I made a 2.4.26 kernel
    and reading all this I decided to update
    i emerge the new kernel, build it, (make menuconfig)
    then copied the kernel to /boot

    but when I boot from the OF it won't boot into linux
    saying:"5038 bytes of heap consumed, max in use 41112"
    "start address = 0x0000"

    does anyone know what's wrong?
    Or what options I forgot in the menuconfig?

    Hmmm. How to solve this "CD-RW root related problem" ? I hear about some patch to it.

    Can I request a url ? It's a real problem to run k3b as root :/

    Morgoth:

    K3b runs as user as well. Please RTFM :-)

    You need to add a group called "burning" or so...

    magnetic

    PS Are you guys running the 2.6.8 kernel ATM with Debian? Any problems? Also is the NEt Install working???

    Not in the 2.6.8.1. There is a some type of command filtering enabled in this version that makes impossible to use any burning application under normal user. If you want to know more read 2.6.8.1 news at http://k3b.plainblack.com/index.pl/news2

    Anyway it seems this is realy easy to fix by hand, I disable this filtering stuff by hand in ide driver (if someone need a patch just ask) and k3b seems to work as in 2.6.7
