That might be the only reason to release version 3.0, instead of 2.8, maybe because there was so much work required for the PowerBook drivers the Team decided it was time for a paid upgrade from MorphOS2.x.
I won't believe it until I hear, or read something directly from one of the MorphOS Dev. Team members, or see it posted on the Official MorphOS website. Unless eliot wants to give us some names of Team members and exactly what they said.
I hope the current owners of registered MorphOS2.x will get a discount on MorphOS3.0, compared to first time buyers.
Edit: Glad eliot says there will be no additional fee for 3.0.
I have never understood why people are so eager to think that MorphOS updates would be chargeable at some point (and soon).
What use would it make to make people pay for PowerBook update when they're using other platforms? PowerBook users will pay naturally their version, I don't see any reason to make other users pay their bill. And many PowerBook registration buyers already have some other registered computer. Would it be fair to make them to pay twice or even more?
It would make more sense if keyfile wouldn't be tied to the hardware, but you have to remember that it is and it makes it a bit different to other OSes. And the more I think the more I actually like it.
In MorphOS licensing scheme paid upgrades are made when you upgrade your hardware platform. There isn't much need to make artificial paid upgrades, that would only hurt the small userbase too much IMHO, and the result would be just lots of usable systems with obsoleted operating systems. Just like there's hanging good amount of Pegasos systems with MorphOS 1.4.5 in the closets...
