Common Standards for Aros, MorphOS and Classic (Natami)?

    Hi,

i had several discussions regarding cooperation and common standards for all platforms. I have known that MorphOS is of course the best and most advanced platform. I cannot judge that because I do not have any of the PPC NG OSs. My idea is is there any interest to create common standards between Aros, MorphOS and Classic NG (f.e. Natami)? Some will say that MorphOS will not benefit because it is the most advanced technical already (f.e. MUI) but that is a little too shortsighted in my view.

    Common fields are:
common standards for drivers: PCI and USB that means f.e. a driver producer would only have to create one driver for all platforms
common technologies that are needed for crossplatform-support:
f.e. a common MUI-standard so you do not have to test and adapt software for every platform. That means more software for all platforms. And it creates incentive to software-developers to support amiga again (a bigger potential market)

    What do you think?

Most of these things are already there (though some OSes might need to catch up to the already used common standard):

    Poseidon, OpenPCI, MUI4.

But don't count on "not having to test". What you might achieve is just "a bit less work". There are endianness issues involved and various other quirks.

    MUI4-Sources are open?

kas1 has changed from AmigaOS to Aros and would like to port OWB to Aros. There are improvements needed for Zune to make it easier to port. Perhaps you could help there. Morphos would benefit too because it would be easier to port from Aros to Morphos either.

Extending Olaf's request: although MorphOS next-gen architecture has not been decided yet, as far as I've understood at least some thoughts and preliminary testings have been spent already anyway.

Thus I wonder if, given current work on AROS ABI V1, there could be some talks between both developer camps defining also some common lower-level interface sets for easier porting of applications later-on?

I do understand that it might be way too early to even remotely define some of that kind of stuff from your side - it's just that the unavoidable break of compatibility at the AROS side due to introduction of ABI V1 sounds like a good opportunity to also consider and implement common standards already there for mutual benefit.

I've long advocated having a hosted PPC AROS for MorphOS and for AOS 4 so they could at least run some of the same software as AROS. It seems that AROS has macros for dealing with many incompatibilities such as endianness.
