    hey guys

with the release of morphos 2.6 and the advent of radeon 9600 and radeon 9700 drivers, I wonder if i should switch my gfx cards in my peg2 from a radeon 9000 128mb pro 2 agp to a Radeon 9600 pro agp 128b? The only diff is 3d drivers but will the 2 d performance be notably better? Also, what things in morphos are 3d that are not applications/games? os components I mean..

I see no point in having a graphics card that doesn't use 3D ? It might be faster in 2D ... but will that be noticable?

    What 9600 / 9700 is concerned, is 3d being worked on ?

    From 1.5 months ago:

"Radeon 9500Pro, 9600Pro/XT, 9700Pro and 9800Pro will be supported but will only provide limited acceleration support with the supplied Radeon driver, e.g. all the enhanced display alpha effects are not h/w accelerated"

    From one month ago:

"There is no point to find or buy those (9800/9700/9600) cards ... A 3D driver for those cards is nowhere near, at least not likely for the forthcoming release(s)"

You might also want to check the voltage requirements of that 9600 before you plug it in.

I think Andreas kind of answered it. Stay with the R200 for now.

Interestingly, while the MorphOS 2.6 release notes as well as the hardware compatibility page indeed mention only the 9600 XT/Pro and the 9700 Pro as supported, the MorphOS 2.6 ReadMe says "Radeon9500/9600XT/9600Pro/9700Pro/9800 (2D only)".

You can't use a R9600 card in a Pegasos2 due to voltage restrictions. The AGP slot found in the Pegasos2 can not handle it.

You are right, my mistake. I have a radeon 9800 here that is the correct voltage should i install that instead of the radeon 9000 pro 2?

What i'm trying to get at guys is why do you need 3d except for demos and games? No transparency/effects with ambient/morphos or??

ok but the question remains even without the effects is there a speed increase in other areas to justify the swap or no? what desktop effects exactly?

and btw first time i've seen someone link to the same thread they posted the link on ..lulz

You must be an infrequent MorphZone visitor then ;-)

What kind of results would you expect? I doubt 2D performance changed all that much. Only possible benefit that springs to mind here would be support for overlays wider than 1536 pixels, but a 8500/9100 could handle that too.

    Update:

    > the hardware compatibility page indeed mention only the 9600 XT/Pro
    > and the 9700 Pro as supported

It has been changed to mention the 9800 as well.

cool thx for the update. I really would like to get one of the pros with a technical answer for my question... like pega or bigfoot or henes or jaca or anyone..

I'd say: no, it isn't justified. Changing the card to an R300 based doesn't give you more vmem and while 2D blits should be faster, you say bye bye to all the allerated alpha operations, transitions, darken/brighten effects that are all used by both Enhanced Display and MUI. Comparing the GUI experience between PowerBook and my Pegasos2 with R9250, I'd say: stick to R200 for now until we've got 3D support for it.
