    Hi,

I am trying to setup a headless efika with a virtual monitor. So far, MorphOS boots without the graphics board but I didn't managed to log in with a VNC client.

    Any advice ?

    Ok. got it.

You need to install the VNC server... Virtual Monitor is just a... virtual monitor and not a VNC server by itself.

    Thanks for advice.

Is that normal? Does this virtual monitor have any configuration, perhaps in its icon's tootltypes?

    Hi,

Here is some tips about using virtual monitor + VNC server

    1) Start from a fresh installation
I experienced some trouble with old/unperfect installation of MorphOS. Trying from a fresh install worked right away. It can saves lot of time !

    2) Remove all fancy theme and features like gradient, backdrop window & screen image. Go for a straight and clean MUI setup too. Stuntzi preset is a good start. VNC server uses Zlib compression scheme. Less details to compress mean faster VNC in the end. It can help a lot with Efika for example which have a low cpu power. For theme, go for malaxami for example.

    3) Copy Sys:MorphOS/Storage/Monitors/Virtual#? to Sys:MorphOS/Devs/Monitors
Reboot or double clic the virtual monitor. This will add new mode to screenmode prefs.

    4) Install VNC Server
Set a global password access. Don't forget to uncheck the local prompt. Once virtual screenmode selected, you can't see what's going on !

    5) Get your IP
Open a shell, type ifconfig. Write down or remember the IP address. You will need it to logon with VNC client. You should set a static IP. If your DHCP lease change the IP, you'll have to scan your network to find the new IP.

    6) Check your VNC connection
Try different VNC clients. I had some trouble finding one that worked well. Dunno why... I use Thight VNC.

    7) Open Monitor preferences and set ambient screen to Virtual 640x480@24. Remove Enhanced display checkmark if set. Save. Reboot & pray.

    8) Connect with your VNC client

EDIT : I have just removed the radeon card... and Ambient can't open a screen. It seems you can't run without a graphic card on morphos 2.4 with virtual monitor...

That's it. You can skip configuring Virtual driver (steps 3 and 7) as it is non-functional. You need a graphics card inside the server to get any output to your VNC client. If you look at the serial log you can read that it stops here.

Virtual is a graphics driver for allowing remote connection (such as VNC) without the need of a physically builtin grahics card.

The bug have been reproduced by some members of the MorphOS team. Maybe it will be fixed in 2.5 release.
