YouTube - AmigaOne X5K Options For Better Viewing

One thing I need to have for work is viewing of YouTube videos, and although I don't expect 1080p, I do need something that plays, 720p would be fine, and at least the audio and video work in tune with each other.

As a new MorphOS user, AmigaOne X5K and running the newest 3.19, what options do I have that would allow the above.

A visit to YouTube using Wayfarer 9 did not work for me and although I know there are some settings one can tweak, I will try those but odds seem against me they will work much at all unless others here use an X5K and can offer some advice.

On my AmigaOS 4.1 side I use Video Vortex and it works great, good quality, easy search for a video, and good playback as well. No lost video and audio like I just experienced trying to visit via a web browser.

I have a ATI 1950 that I boot and run MorphOS on. On my AmigaOne side I use the RX580 and it performs well with Video Vortex and Emotion for playback.

    Any options for me?

This is my 1st issue I need to solve if I am to use MorphOS more often now that I have a license for it.

Would be nice if I can use this daily as well.

    Thanks

    TJ

I would install MPlayer and try https://www.morphos-storage.net/?id=2197355

I never tried it, but it looks promising.

For the best browsing try a proxy server as well as all the other tweaks.

I do not think the MOS video card drivers support the hardware video decode capabilities on your GPU's, therefore you are relying on poor PPC CPU rendering as you experienced in wayfarer. I do not think there is anything you can do about it.

MOS experts please correct me if I am wrong.

Correct. The other wammy is that MorphOS leverages Altivec for media playback.

Wayfarer and video media on a fast G5 will yield better playback than an x5000. A fast G5 will play media on par with 4.x with the GPU transcoding.

It would be ideal if MorphOS updated it's video drivers and /or CPU. :)

I still think TJ will get usable performance with thinking outside the 📦.

As far as I remember, the last working version of MPlayer for X5000 is version 1.1. Can be found here:

    http://fabportnawak.free.fr/mplayer/

Version 1.4 on MorphOS-Storage is only with Altivec, which does not work on X5000:
"a seperate non-AltiVec version might be released at a later point" which never happened.

By the way, OS4 users can use the latest version 1.5:
    https://os4depot.net/?function=showfile&file=video/play/mplayer.lha

Some time ago, I have asked the MorphOS developers also to release a non-Altivec version but unfortunately X5000 users are a minority so it was not worth the efforts...
    AmigaOne X5000 @ 2GHz / 4GB RAM / Radeon X1650 / AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition / MorphOS 3.19
    Amiga1200 / Blizzard 1230 IV PiStorm32-lite / 128 MB RAM / AmigaOS 3.9

No way. OS4 with A-Eon's drivers can decode and play 4k video with almost no CPU load, whereas 2.5-2.7 GHz G5 may struggle with decoding and playing 1080p video (i.e. ¼ of 4k's pixel count) in software, depending on codec, profile, bitrate etc.

Even MorphOS users on X5000, Sam460, Pegasos I/II G3 and Efika PPC combined are probably only a small fraction of all MorphOS users. Nonetheless, I too would welcome a non-AltiVec version of the most recent MPlayer for MorphOS, especially as the only MorphOS platforms available new are X5000 and Sam460.

Youtube's website has gotten really slow lately. I'm exploring options to improve things a bit with Wayfarer.

I was referring to a 2.5 or 2.7 G5 running MorphOS be similar in raw video playback to an x5000 running AmigaOS 4.x with the added on video drivers.

So you are correct, I was playing 1080p on my 2.7 and spoke to a friend running similar media on his x5000 and the results were similar.

    Yes, that's what I've understood.

For a very loose definition of "similar", then. The G5 struggles with more demanding codecs, profiles and bitrates of 1080p videos. Also, the G5 CPU remains at maximum load constantly.

(sorry see it has been mentioned already)..

Yeh I mentioned I use it in my 1st post and I do really like it.

If the MorphOS Team Devs has looked into it, no idea, but yeh a "user friendly easy to install" app like Video Vortex for MorphOS would be sweet!

The nice thing, for me since I dual boot, I can just switch to Amiga OS 4.1 when I need to do video viewing and then MorphOS for other, once I find that "other" I need. I am too new to MorphOS to say yet but will get there!
