    Hi all,

I've just got round to getting my MorphOS machine out of storage following a house move a couple of years ago. (PowerBook G4). I've updated to 3.18 and that seems to have gone very well. Seems more stable too - I distinctly remember that sometimes on boot the screen would not initialise or freeze or something (difficult to explain - it kind of all faded out to white) but anyway, I've not had that, or anything else happen yet so kudos to the team on the new release.

It looks like I used to use, or at least have used in the past "Grunch" for installing and managing packages but that appears to be a completely dead duck now. Everything it does that involves the outside world fails on dead links. Is that really the case or do I need to manually update something to get that to work?

Assuming it's dead, is there an alternative? I noticed "Easy2Install" on Morphos Storage. Would that be a reasonable replacement?

    Thanks.

    grunch works a little
goto the multiple database and make updates
close it and do it again and again
    easyinstall is complementary and better

    Hi MartinW,

Easy2Install is always in beta version.

Because it must support all archives from www.morphos-storage.net before remove "beta"...

Some archives are "compatible" with it for the moment (see readme for explanations) but some old archives aren't compatible for version number for example but the archives will be installed (extracted) to the destination.

A beta17 is on the way with new features.

Thanks all - I'll have another look as soon as I get a chance, hopefully this evening.

It certainly does sound like Grunch is suffering from the HTTPS situation and I imagine that will only get worse. I'll take Easy2Install for a spin and see what I'm left with.

Part of my problem is that I didn't install most of this. I installed the Chrysallis pack some years back (which I know is from Papiosaur above). This is great for getting started and I love the look and feel that I now have, but of course I now have the task of updating stuf that I didn't install.

It doesn't help that my hardware is a bit cranky and gets all hot and bothered at the slightest request for it to do something, but that's a different story. Probably one we're all familiar with!

Grunch works like expected. Most of the packets failing are located at services no longer existing or changed name.

HTTPS:// is one reason for this, but should not be a problem if the developer takes this into account and chooses a proper fallback.

I could remove all "common" sources like Ambient and what not to focus on active developers, but I don't intent to fix broken archives or links.

The plan was/is to add Grunch in a more up to date form for MorphOS NG in the future. The current downloader is hand written and I would use some Reggae stuff for that. Also the stuff had a version for 68K AmigaOS, which I would consider obsolete.

You can remove all faulty invalid data from database yourself. That is the key feature. You can even build your own database, which has only working entries and share it with others.
