    Hello, I am having some trouble with installing linux on my efika. The system is comprised from Efika, 100 GB Hard Disk and an ATI Radeon 9250 card.

    I downloaded and put into a USB memory stick the following files from www.efika.info: DI_EFIKA, kernel_efika and modules_efika.tgz.

    I booted the DI_EFIKA and did a complete install on the hard disk - I created 3 partitions: /, /home and swap. When the installer finished it restarted the system and I tried to boot with the following command:

    boot hd0:0 kernel_efika root=/dev/sda1 console=ttyPSC0

    It then gets to the following point:
    Quote:

    INIT: Entering runlevel: 2
    Starting system log daemon: syslogd.
    Starting kernel log daemon: klogd.
    Starting portmap daemon...Already running..

    Starting NFS common utilities: statd.
    Starting anac(h)ronistic cron: anacron.
    Starting deferred execution scheduler: atd.
    Starting periodic command scheduler: crond.

    After that nothing - no prompt - no reaction to the keyboard.

    After you finished the Debian installation, you must log into your desktop manager and copy he kernel and modules into your sda1 partition /boot. Then you can boot Debian from the OF without the USB key.
    For a complete Debian installation tutorial on Efika, check the Efika Book.

    @Mark

    I tried to register twice at powerdeveloper.org with no success. I am still waiting those activation emails that never came. That is why I am posting here because I know efika is relevant hardware.

    @SoundSquare

    Thanks I fixed the problem. I performed the debian install completely from the serial port and when it finished and restarted there was no getty listening to that port. The solution was to plug keyboard, mouse and monitor which worked but led me to the next problem..

    Graphic anomalies, glitches, noise and disruption of the video signal after some time in gnome. Very annoying! After excesive testing I found out I have an overheating problem! Yes it looks like the radeon gets hot with certain operations (like resizing windows especialy the gnome system monitor) and malfunctions. The board is brand new Gigabyte and passively cooled. After I put my hairdryer throwing cold air on top of the card it starts to behave normaly.

    I have taken some videos with my cellphone to demonstrate it. If somebody wants them, I can send them via email.

    This is not a problem, it's just that Gnome is not usable on Efika, way too slow. Use XFCE4 or Fluxbox instead.
    It'sz a pity you can't register on PPCZone, but at least you can read the post, we discussed that many times there :)

    I am not talking about slowness. Take a look here:

    thanks for the vids ! that's a weird behaviour indeed !
    do you have the same kind of issues using another window manager such as XFCE4 or Fluxbox ? tha would be interesting to check that. Then maybe it would come from your xorg.cong or even your graphic card !
    I hope you'll figure it out.

    Try to plug the card into another computer, and see if it behaves normally then. Maybe your card is made strictly for 4x/8x AGP slot, which has a lower voltage than EFIKA's 3.3v slot? That could explain the overheating (speaking about the case when neither your hardware is defective, just incompatible).

    I've a GeCube R9250. It has 128MB and 128 bit memory bus, it's low-profile, and it works perfectly with my Efika. Fast, passively cooled, and doesn't get hot at all.
