We are designing a Pegasos Game console for MMOG that should have other qualities, including web browsing, file sharing and Voice/Video over IP capibility. Anything else? Thought about wireless adapters, web cams and CD/DVD R/W, etc. as plug-ins...

Proposal being developed now. Your ideas are WELCOME! What can we add that no one else does now? What cool game features does the "cool computing" system need to support?

    R&B :-)

    Sure
ride the Retro Wave, and support Emulation ;-)
To avoid copyright Problems (like the big N did)
Just provide a cool Hardware peace, for example the
posibility to use the old analogue Sticks from Amiga/Sega etc..Then perhaps over 3rd Party proggers they can provide a module/CD whatever which make the whole System to a SNES Master System or whatever.

This is at least what I dream of ;-) ( And surely build uppon a small Linux distro.. when I get more into the Linux sttuff ;-)

Sure would be cool if the box could also do PVR like the Tivo or
ReplayTV. Support for forcefeedback controllers? :)

    Sounds like another good idea!

    Hello,

Here some ideas for a game console :

    - IRDA joypads (so it's more comfortable)
    - Joypads compatible with PC joystick (so user have more choice)
    - Joypads compatible with PSX joypads (there is lots of adaptators)
    - DVD player
    - DivX player
    - MP3 player
    - CDDA player
    - other media files player
    - all features of the Philips DVD Recorder (record TV programs, duplicate DVD,...).
    - Compatible with other console (GameCube, Playstation 2)

For games, I think a console must support Shoot Them Up, Beat Them Up and Racing Games.

We can also include educationnal software (math, language,...) and professionnal but easy to use software : paint program, music program,...

I thin DAFF might already have some of this covered but:

    1. Integrated SD/CF/Memory Stick/whatever media slots
    2. Wireless capability as standard to support:
    3. Realtime media streaming from home LAN as a TV/HDTV playback device (JPEG, MOV, DIVX etc.) - these boxes retail by themselves for $199 to $299...you could do it with a bit of software add on
    4. and of course, the ability to turn into a fully fledged dev system/computer with addition of keyboard, large HD etc.
    5. CDRW/DVR+/-R option ?
    6. Component video out of course - maybe everything via DVI so you could go analog or digital by change of a cable...or direct to DVI for TVs with DVI now

In short...everything you want for the home entertainment/media box....since getting quality games signed up and developed is quite a struggle, this added functionality would sell well In My Opinion.

    Steve

PS Is my Peg II shipping from this batch or the next ...I won't have time to touch it for 2 weeks or more but it'd be nice to know :-D

    1. no more than 149$us (Xbox gonna be 149$us in 2 weeks)
    2. Access to old Amiga games (GBA proves that people still wanna buy old games)
    3. Bluetooth (or IRDA) networking (cheap and no cables)
    4. OPA based. ;-) :-D
    5. games run off SD cards and not cd-rom (like GP32)
    6. SNES type controller.

Free development tools to attract developers, full 3d Open GL api for the developers to work on, Open AL for the sound (push the developers to use 3d sound and advertise this feature heavily), off the shelf 3d graphics chip and sound chip, Flash disk or hard drive. DivX/Xvid & installable codecs should be NESESSARY! With internet connectivity (ADSL & cable), anyone who doesn't know about computers could enjoy Divx movies in his/her living room. It might generate some ideas that you promote piracy but you will be providing only the tools. Games should be the hard part because the market is dominated by Microsuck, Sony and Nintendo. You should try to promote features that other consoles don't support. As for the browsing.... that's hard too! I don't really think that the existing amiga browsers can be used at full-time basis by the people who are used to IE because of the lack Java and Flash and of the problematic Javascripit, SSL etc. They are just not mature enough.

TiVO-like hard disk recording for the entry-level model and DVD-R recording for the high-end. The high end should be able to play DVD movies too with 6-channel speaker output. EDIT -- Also, 4 usb2 ports for Joysticks, mice and external hard disks and MP3 players. Promote the console as one that can be used with non proprietary controllers and accessories.

if u are giung to use MOS os the os for this thing make the games able to be played on a pegasos machine thats not specificaly the gaming platform.

also what if you could download the game online, burn it to a cdr and play it. we would need some type of code build into the game that once it is put into the system the game recognizes only that particular console that way u could not pirate the game.....except u could burn multiple cd's to begin with.......mabey this is not the best idea never mind.
are you trying ot compete with this?

Great idea, I would like to see a Pegasos game console :-)

I think a modular Pegasos gamestation would be cool. Beginning with a basic console wich you can upgrade with different modules. Something like this. For instance you could have a module for different kind of joysticks or a module for a multimedia station or a module so you could use it as an computer, etc. The options are endless.

Make the games downloadable off the internet with some specific authentication parts to be custom to each consoles' serial number (-- I know I'm crap on explaining --). On the web site part do some sophisticated software that compiles the custom code on the fly, upon demand. This should stop piracy... for a while!

Now this is starting to looking like my Amiga Project was going.

How about full SEGA Dreamcast support? Then you have 400-500 games right in no time. Be sure to use Kyro - PowerVR as its main gfx core.

Let it have connectors for Amiga Joysticks. They are the best.

How about a fight with ZipStick? :)

I think it's a great idea if done as an actual game console.
Meaning remove the hard drive and anything else unecessary
    for gaming.

G3 600 is great performance with custom tuned games and
good direct hardware drivers. Built in set amount of ram
and gfx card would be a good idea. Put in as small a
package as possible and sell at a low price to appeal to
    emulator and hobby gaming people.

The only real purpose imo to producing a game console is
to make it specifically for games, dropping support for
cd-writing, even dvd playing etc. to save cost and make
the experience more focused. Network support is a good
idea though. We already have the Pegasos computer so
making this as different and customized as possible
while focusing primarily on gaming is the way to go.

I also think the most important issue would be the
development of specific games/emulators for the console
environment, many computer games dont "work" on a game
console. A different standard of accessability needs to
be adopted. As an example you can't use the high
resolutions, small characters and font's used in many
PC games on a television screen comfortably. Consideration
needs to be made to allow playing primarily from a gamepad
without keyboard etc. present. Self booting media is a
must. Basically making an open/hobby console similar to
Nintendo's GameCube with connectivity to the Pegasos
computer is what I would like to see.

I don't think you plan to compete with Nintendo/Sony
directly in this respect, but you could gain a good
    following in the hobby/classic/emulation gaming
    segments. :)

    P.S:
If you plan something more akin to a stb, then
you may have different requirements altogether.
But a game console should be a device tuned for
a specific purpose and be low cost imo. A more
multipurpose device that also plays games isn't
that far from a preconfigured existing Pegasos
    system.

Note: Just want to add that I also favour PowerVR. :)

sega dream cast or sega saturn suport (or both) would be a great idea....get sega in on this and u have more sponsirship money

    and for the record.....this justifies all my game related postes hehe :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

oh! by the way if u do dreamcast compatibility make sure u talk to sega about it to get their help instead of trying ot reverse engener thier stuff and make sure in the agreement that they let u use it on the actualy MOS machines and not jsut the PEG Game box

I think that making it a pure old-school games console is a really bad idea. They will be able to build it but unless they have some 200 million dollars to invest on it, it will be a useless (yet slick!) piece of hardware with no software to run on. Remember, no hard disk means no PC-style O.S., no API, no function libraries, no tools for development, proprietary development laguages, a lot of machine code, low level electronics to make hardware peripherals etc.

And then?... Do you expect any serious games companies to release their titles on this platform? They're gonna ask "Why would anyone buy this machine from this unknown Genesi company instead of XBOX or PS2? What assurances do we get that Genesi will still be around in a week's time?

As for the customers, how many consoles can Genesi sell at a damage price? 1000? 10.000 Anything less than a million would imply that the machine will have to be really outdated so it won't be a financial guillotine for Genesi. Even Sega got crippled in this market.

Now that I think about this again, I believe it's a really bad idea... solutions like the guardian that target the money-making enterprise market is a YES-YES-YES! Dirt cheap products that aim the consumer market is a NO-NO-NO (unless you are Sony or MS).

MorphOS is more than capable of booting
API components directly from a CD or
other storage medium without the use of
a hard drive, or you could put these
components onto an on-board rom chip or
link directly into the software. Good
developer software API support is a must
for any new game console, but it does
have to be different than a standard computer. :)

yes but still, even if they build it, I don't think many people outside the community will be interested. Have you heard about XBOX2? It is going to be housing 3 G5 cpu's!!! Holy cr!p this beast is gonna be faster than a server! Sadly enough, genesi will have to compete with that :-( !

I agree, it's not going to be easy to compete
on any level with Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft.

Sega had a system that was a generation ahead
of itself with many innovative features,
high quality games, online play, large fan base
etc. and they found the market too difficult to
stay in. Nokia recently launched the N-Gauge
and it has not done well to say the least.

There may be a niche market for hobbyist gamers
and developers around the world, but competing
head on with established NextGen consoles isn't
    really an option.

I think, the reason Sega failed with dreamcast was their past failures. Personaly I wouldn't trust buying a console from a company that has failed many past products (Sega Saturn, Sega32x, mega CD etc). They just got a very bad reputation and the release of PS2 worsened things even more.
To be honest I think it is impossible for genesi to market anything outside the niche markets. Not with their current growth ratio.

This has all been done before and it has
never done well in the long run. Does
3DO ring a bell or CDI or Dreamcast or
the CDTV. I won't even mention Atari Jaguar!

Who is the market target? I can buy a gamecube for
peanuts with top games and online play.

I think money spent to develop good games
for Pegasos computer would be more profitable
than another console in a tough market.

No one can go head to head with Sony for the usual game console. This needs to be dramatic.

I also have my doubts about this.

We've got enough consoles in the world.
If we want to do some other stuff, we can get computers to do this. Especially because the price is not much these days.

If you want to make something totally new, and you want it to sell to the big mass of people out there, the "console" should be cheap enough for these people to buy it.

I think this will be a major problem.

Otherwise, I sure would want a console in where I could play Wings or Banshee with my Arcade joysticks!!

    Bye,

    Spidey
