BeOS on Pegasos

I saw Bernd on an avi-file that was recorded from TV (it was german). He said that there'll maybe be a PPC Port when Zeta reaches the final state IIRC. Well, Zeta is now very near to the final state and Yellowtab said the final version will be avilable around christmas. So maybe the Pegasos port will come soon :)
Also, it shouldn't be too hard to port it to PPC because they based on Dano 5.1. And BeOS was avilable for PPC. Since they haven't rewritten the whole kernel it should be easy to port it. I think the most C-Parts need only to be recompiled.

    UPDATE!

    BeOS 4.5/5 Pro owners, beware!
If you have a MacOS8 installation for MacOnLinux you could possibly run BeOS on it! Just put the CD and install it with the included DiskTools and MacTools!!
This could be the only way to run BeOS on Pegasos right now!

Yellow Tab doesn't have the source code to BeOS. They didn't even fix the memory (512+ RAM) or the other problems it has (AMD, etc...)

Zeta is a lot more buggier than BeOS R5 Personal Edition.

There won't be be a port of Zeta to the PPC anytime soon :-(

This is a long standing and incorrect rumour.

I think you'll find that these are not that easy to fix. They have pretty limited resources.

Then what are they waiting to update the kernel to fix these problems (RAM, certain processors, etc...)?

Not really. They replaced the Media Player with some monstrosity instead of sprucing up the existing one. But then, YT doesn't have the source code to BeOS.

When I see software, from a 3rd party developer, to patch the Kernel for a supported OS. That's when you realize that they don't have the source code themselves. Won't people being able to install Zeta increase their sales? -_-

Bottom Line: It's safe to assume that they don't have access to the "Dano" source code.

I really don't know... The most probable thing is that they have incomplete sources.

About BeOS on MOL, I asked the MOL developers and here's the answer:

    Quote:

    > My questions are: did somebody try BeOS on MacOnLinux?
    > Do you think it could work?

Not out of the box, no.

    > I read that MOL needs OS side drivers. Is it true?

Well... In order to maximize performance, hardware emulation
is avoided and custom device drivers are mostly used instead.

However, there is essentially emulation support for everything
in an oldworld machine except video and networking (I did some
experiment with direct video access through a kernel level proxy
    though).
The SCSI host adapter emulation has not been used for
quite a while and it might no longer work very well (in particular,
it is not really documented etc).

So basically, it might be marginally possible to boot BeOS
using an oldworld ROM (for open firmware), although I believe one
would have to hack a few things in MOL (redirect mouse input to the ADB
    chip,
add some basic video emulation, fixup the SCSI host adapter
    configuration).

Actually, it might be better to skip the oldworld ROM altogether
and use OpenBIOS instead (although one probably need to improve
    the boot loader a bit).

    /Samuel

I've met the Zeta guys on a number of occasions and they have the nasty problem of an NDA...

They wont admit what they have but it's pretty clear they have everything they need.

They have annoing things called customers and my guess is a lot of the work they are doing is being requested.

The 512MB limit is really not a big issue for a system which runs happily in under 128MB. They may be cautious about changing the kernel code as it'll be a major job and I doubt they want to undertake anything that big before the release of R1.0.

When I bought my i80486, I went for 8 megs of RAM for Windows 3.1. The lady that sold me the computer said that 4 megs was more than enough for my usage. She was so wrong. Once I got OS/2 2.11 installed on my i80486, I was glad I had purchased 8 megs RAM instead of only 4... :-D

    It's never enough.

/me wishes for another 512 megs RAM for WoW and HL2 right now... ;-) :-(
