You could try using a powered hub. Powerbook ports (in fact most USB ports) supply only 500mA current, as per the USB specs. In my experience many USB ports supply more than this, resulting in devices which work fine on some ports, but do not work properly on others. (eg, I have an external USB hard drive which requires 700mA - on the powerbook it requires seperate power supply, on most desktops it works just fine from the USB power.)
It may be that the device is supplied with enough current to initialise, but fails after a few seconds under the 'heavy use' of writing (or starts trying to charge an internal battery, adding to the load).
