New at morphos, so with that said, what can i do with my new efika?

    1) games(saw the thread, but what's recommended?)

    2) word processing(got fw-need some straight forward steps to connecting a usb hp-2400 series printer.

    3) someone help me with mame( l love mame!)

    4) movies(i have avi files, but no luck with mplayer or vlc

    5) whdload

    6) getting online with serial port by way of dial up!

    7) to date all i've done with it is played gemz!

    8) floppy?

    9) Can i actually burn something?

    10) open for your suggestions :-o -

someone here said it was a toy (compared to the pegs)
    a fun toy nonetheless.
well, i'm not seeing much here compared to my 1200T
I guess i'm not having much fun, not yet anyways!
    Give me something you all!

    Hi,
for games i guess the hyperion powerpc ports works pretty well, wipeout and quake atleast, not much of a gameplayer
myself, but i've seen wipeout on efika...runs pretty good :)

for word processing.....whats wrong with Ed ? :)

yeah..Mame kicks ass.....or Metal Slug series do

for movies, what happends when you try playing a movie ?

getting online with serial port sounds horrible, you should get ethernet up and running, invest in a router that can
do all the adsl modem talk, and just plug efika into that.
Dont really know if the morphos tcp stack can do dialup
even, you might get stuck with older amiga software like miami with no way of getting a keyfile.
As a backup solution there is usbmodem.device in morphos usb stack that might support modem with your
mobilephone, i use that as a emergency solution when needed and just dial *99# and use the gprs or 3G internet
available from phone, but that might get expensive :)

Diamonds game included should be deleted, wife got addicted to it and sits for hours :)

    Floppies...its 2008...

burning i dont have clue about either, MakeCD or FryingPan might work, but i have no idea if efika's ide performance is good enough.

Its a fun toy, but without internet connection i would get
bored too, being able to just sit down with a cup of coffie and surf or read emails, playing some sid's in the background with a computer that draws about 5 watts or so is just cool.

well if you have an open cient with the dedicated case, it's really handy to make your books stand on shelves.

    xyphoid,

since you didn't answer in the other related thread, did you really try what we suggested about mplayer: adding ao=null in conf/config file *or* -ao null at the end of command line? This is the only cure until audio driver is available. And about uae, the same kind of workaround is needed. And maybe for mame too.

    Hey Fab!

lost track. I now realize from reading the threads that not all codecs or whatever work for instance i had vlc playing an avi today till the timeout

So now for mplayer exactly how do i change the config. I have a couple of ways from you here and some other suggestions, but I want to try your way just give me the steps! Still though, there is no audio huh?
I have to find a ver of mame which may work, seems no one is explaining how to get it going.
And i'm not understanding the printing thing thought it would be as easy as plug into usb, poseidon picks it up go to ambient settings choose printer pull up hp and add usbprinter.device and go....but that would be too simple :-x

for mplayer with no audio output do,

    mplayer -ao null thebestmovie.avi

to permanently not use audio with mplayer you can
edit config (its just a text file) in the conf dir of your mplayer installation, and add,

    ao=null

now you can just do mplayer thebestmovie.avi and no audio is used

for mame i didnt think there was any magic involved other that copying rom files to your rom directory and
    select it from the gui

I just tried the MAME port found here http://pagesperso-orange.fr/fabien.coeurjoly/

Seems pointless on the Efika. Not even Star Force would run full speed and that is a Z80-based game from 1984.

Which version have you tried? Some older versions of MAME should work better on low-powered systems.

I second having an adf reader - being able to mount and at least read from floppy, hard drive, cd/dvd images would be really handy. It's a few years ago now but I used to have some Win32 program that treated adf images like directories - it even had a nice little Amiga rainbow check mark on the directory icon.
PPC assembly ain't so bad... ;)

xadmaster supports adf format (you'll only be able to browse dos ones, of course). So you can open them with xadmaster tools or voodoo-x. Ambient itself can't browse them directly because xadfs doesn't support disk formats in xad.

come on efika clocked@ 400mhz my 1200 060 playes mame 060....playable on few games even mr do! with audio

I would be very shocked if this can't be processed on the efika? Too much emulation being done simultaneously?

    xyphoid,

you can always try a few games with mame, sure but don't expect too much. And just for your information, between the version made for amiga (0.35 or so) and current morphos version (0.120), about 8 years have passed and mame itself became at least 3-4 times slower (while being much more rich and accurate).

I's suggest you use the oldest mame versions you can. I think the oldest one you can find on my pages is 0.60 or so. They're not available anymore, but easily reachable with webarchive. I can reupload them if you really need.

Hey Fab, that's the version i want to use. Occasionally, it would fail... and need to reboot(on the 1200), but i copied it to a usb to efika, double clicked, but nothing hapened!? Believe it or not i have the beta 030ver also which works for on some.

double-clicked 0.60 68k version you mean? This 68k version was issued from my morphos version IIRC (compiled by sixk), but i don't think doubleclicking it would do much since it didn't have a gui at that time AFAIR.

You can also run older 68k ones, maybe it will even behave quite fine with trance. :)

Anyway, i might recompile 0.69 and fix some of its bugs. Should be better for efika users.

using cli works!! mame 030-060 68k works sweet even using defaults. i tried
    punchout
    mr. do
    gunsmoke
    ms pacman
    pacman
    sly spy
    final fight- seems abit slow

just a few classics. This is what i've been waiting for

only bug so far, sometimes locks up after esc. onto the ambient screen(not due to mame)

    Off to try newer classics..

found one thing to keep me occupied on efika ;-) I'll figure out printing later after i have more fun

We need thaat sound driver badly!!
other irritating bug is usb freezing!

Having a little more fun with morphos 2.0 on efika.
got morph mame going, and intend to see how it performs with newer arcade titles

    2) word processing(got fw-need some straight forward steps to connecting a usb hp-2400 series printer.
    - I still haven't got a clue on how to get the printer going (usb hp2430)

    4) movies(i have avi files, but no luck with mplayer or vlc

    - Problem solved bot work, i lean more to vlc ;-)
matters not though without sound on either

    5) whdload - is this compatible on morphos?

    10) like the showgirls viewer- nice!!

Why vlc? And btw, mplayer is faster (at least by 30%), so it should be preferrable on efika.

No, you cant use whdload with MorphOS.

You have to set up a UAE workbench installation first and then install WHDLoad in that.

Yes, thats how I do. I always have my A1200 with 030
ready to use with WHDLoad. For the rest I use MorphOS.

It would be nice to have this working in MorphOS but as long as Peg, efika doesnt have the custom AmigaChips its only a dream.
Btw, wasnt there a port going on where they tried to implement UAE in Aros?

I would still love to have an efika shoe horned into the box of a metal detector, turning it into a portable ground penetrating radar!! It could become the MorphOS powered home security system, and fit on the wall.

Seriously, I'm not sure what I'm going to use the efika here for just yet. I guess it depends on if I can ever find a tiny TFT to mount on the box! I want a PortaMOS

My kid wants an Efika powered mini-Gundam-Power-Ranger-Transformer-DeathStar-Overlord!
