Can't boot from hard disk, *can* boot from CD

After getting the hardware set up and running, I followed the directions posted in MorphZone to copy MorphOS to the hard disk. I created two partitions, one 20 MB and the other 1 GB, used the install script to copy boot.img to the first, and the system to the second (I've actually done this twice now).

I have not set up auto boot, so I type:

    boot /pci/ide/disk@0,0:0 boot.img

It spins the little characters around for a bit as it boots, then writes "Quark/OpenFirmware" to the screen, then hangs with a blinking cursor.

I have not tried looking at the serial port output, and can't right now because I left my USB serial adapter at home.

    Any ideas? Thanks a bunch!

    Is the first partition FFS?
Do both partitions have unique names?
    Did you try

    boot /pci/ide/disk@0,0:0 boot.img bootdevice=dh0:

Replace dh0: by the unit of your second partition.

The first partition is FFS, the second SFS. The first is named "bi0", the second "DH0". I tried typing exactly what you suggested, "boot /pci/ide/disk@0,0:0 boot.img bootdevice=DH0:", but it behaves the same way.

Have you checked inside SCSI-Config to ensure that the hardrive is on ide-0? Also, have you tried a warm-reset before entering the boot command?

    @rmann

Also, make sure you got the right boot.img file as, on the latest MOS, you got both Peg1 and Peg2 boot images. First time I updated, it installed the wrong one (in my case) and I had to boot with CD to go copy/rename it to the HD.

    Hope it helps!

    "ls /pci/ide" returns:

    disk@0,0
    cdrom@1,0

"boot hd:0 boot.img" spins, displays "Quark/OpenFirmware", then hangs. So does "boot ide:0 boot.img".

Someone else asked if I got the correct boot.img file. I'm not sure. Whatever the Install script copied is what I've got.

I have the drive on the main IDE controller, as master, and the CDROM the second IDE controller, as master.

The first (small) partition is NOT bootable, the second is.

    Did I forget anything else?

    SO type ls /pci/ide/disk@0,0:0

    or

    ls hd:0

this will tell you the contents of your boot image partition - you should see your boot.img there

it could be called bootpeg2.img as well list the contents here for furthur help.

    magnetic

also make sure you are using flat ultra ata 133 80wire cable on your hd

    "ls hd" returns:

    RDB partition 0 <FFS>: <bi0> (0x444F5301)
    RDB partition 1 <SFS>: <DH0> (0x53465300)

The drive was previously formatted HFS+ (Macintosh).

Quick note - when I did my OS upgrade a month back (updated to 1.4.2 on my pegI) the boot.img that comes on the CD did EXACTLY what you say happens on your machine.

Thankfully I have a cd of 1.3/1.4 as well as 1.4.2 - I booted from the 1.4 CD and copyed over the NEW boot.img from the ftp for my pegI and it booted (we wont go into my other problems here but that was the OF one! :)

So I suggest you DO have the wrong boot.img.

Hmm. Is there a way to get the boot.img used by the CD? The CD boots fine, so perhaps I can manually copy that file?

boot via cd, then open the cd's contents and show all. its in the base directory. but this wont be the most up-to-date copy of boot.img

So what i suggest you do is copy the cd's image twice: once as boot.img and once as boot.img-works. Reboot without the cd, and if the HD boots ok you know that image is fine. Wwhen you know the harddrive will boot off of that boot.img write over it with the newest version that youve downloaded.

That should still work but if it doesnt work then you can tell the OF to boot from boot.img-works instead (which is a copy of the CDs image).

    Follow all that? ;)

Well, since I installed from the CD, aren't the CD's boot.img and the boot.img installed from the CD the same? And if they are the same, shouldn't the machine boot from either one?

Downloading the latest boot.img is a task way beyond me at this point. I can't figure out how to set up Morph OS's networking, and figured that was the least of my troubles.

I set up my Peg II G4 yesterday and I had exactly the same problem but for me it was definately solved by making sure the first, small FFS partition was not bootable.

Have you checked and double checked this?

You could always try and use Scsiconfig to set the Boot Priority of the partition you really want to boot from higher...

I have two partitions on the disk on the Primary IDE Master, a 256MB FFS and a 512MB SFS partition, both set to 512 block size and both with 100 buffers.
