Like the subject says. We can play DVDs, DivX movies, WMV movies, ASF movies, you name it.

Except RealPlayer movies. I haven't found a tool that will play RealPlayer movies.

    Anybody has?

It is not so common type of video file. I havent heard about it yet :o)

Did you test it in Softcinema, FroggerNG, AMP and MPlayer?

Perhaps it's possible with Mpalyer or Frogger.
But as the WMV there are some kinds that are supported and other not :-(

MPlayer can play WMV, except WMV9 (thx M$ for pushing another useless propritary format to the ppl and some stupid users who use and support it).

RealPlayer videos are supported by MPlayer, but probably newer versions of the format not (thx another company for producing a silly and propritary format).

    regards,

    @tokai:

I was surprised to hear you say that mPlayer supported WMV files. I tried to play the WMV video files on the Amiga Forever 6 CD (Deathbed Vigil and so on). However mPlayer only plays the sound on those, not the video.

I wish that Cloanto had not used WMV format. That's really Microsooft's proprietary format, isn't it. Why should we use video formats that Microsoft uses to squeeze others out of the market. An established format like MPG or good new open format like XVID should be used.

Now, I have played RealPlayer files (RM, RAM IIRC) with mPlayer. That seemed to work pretty well. And I played some Quicktime MOV files with it. However it may be true that mPlayer is not supporting the latest versions of those formats. Hopefully mPlayer can be updated for those, and sure, WMV too.

Ok, so the short answer is 'maybe' - depends on the version of WMV / RM ...

I just looked it up on http://www.mplayerhq.hu , MPlayer seems to support RealPlayer v1/2/3/4. And the Real folks seem to be at v8 or v9.

I guess that answers my question. Just a shame that everybody wants to use their proprietary stuff: Apple uses quicktime, RealSoft uses realmedia, M$ uses WMV, and they keep on spitting out newer versions for their systems.

I also looked on sourceforge, couldn't find anything that can convert RM to MPEG or DivX and runs on MOS).

So whats's the conclusion we take of Apple, Real and MS? Right, MOS needs an own propietary format! :-D otherwise we are not to be taken serious. Ah, and while doing so, let's open a music store as well....

/me pissed by that propietary stuff.

i'm happy as long as i can see as much as possible in one (1) media-player.
I hate to use like 3 different programs just to cover all the stupid formats out there.
    VLC does this pretty well.

But wouldn't it be better to just make standard codecs, the system could make use of instead of all media-players using it's own system to decode the material.

If you think about it, thats as stupid (well maybe not, but anyway...) as making a propritary format.
I eat people like you for breakfast ;-)

hehehe Everything should be an open standard imho.

I think that the songs Apple sells are of pathetic quality. My wife did not believe me until I told her to spend 99 cents for a song we already have and then compare it to the iTunes version I made @ 320 kbps. No comparison! My version is clean and crisp sounding; Apple's is not. They are selling inferior quality AAC files to iTunes customers. Their customers just gobble it up too... :-/

I prefer to buy the audio CD and make AAC or MP3 files myself. Then I have no stupid DRM garbage in my files. I hate DRM! I have several copy-protected CDs I ordered from Amazon Germany, because you just can't find Nena's music here in North America. I have broken the protection with every CD and make AAC and MP3 files for my personal use (and my wife too). Kind of pointless puttting DRM on CDs when it can be broken so easily (if you know what you are doing) - just a pain in my "you-know-what." :-) Since I do not steal music or copy it from others, I don't think I should be punished along with the people that do it. Just my viewpoint on all this ridiculous copy protection...

Six days until Duran Duran's new CD, Astronaut, is available here in the USA! Woohoo!

hehehe Danke schön! Ich spreche ein bißchen Deutsch auch! :-)

I love Nena! I have completed my collection of CDs from her. Just wish I could actually get to see her live over here. :)

I first heard her and "99 (Neunundneunzig) Luftballons" when I was in Germany during the summer of 1983. Oh what a summer it was! :)

Never heard of Marius Müller-Westenhausen... What is he like?
