Has 3.3 given us functionality for the PCI and PCI-X slots?

    Well, hope springs eternal.

Couldn't Mark get this going instead of worrying about JIT Java for OWB?

Java isn't very important to me.

2 weeks ago you praised TenFourFox for its speed. Now guess what makes it so fast. Hint: It has nothing to do with Java.

Andreas, OWB serves me more than adequately.
And you pointed out other browers that were frankly dreadful.
    Is Tenfourfox good?
    Damned good.
Timberwolf should aspire to that level of performance.

But right now, I want to use the slots in a G5.

And Kronos, do you have any idea how many more useful things Mark has in mind?
Why not let Fab worry about OWB, and get Mark some bounty money for something else?
there are a lot of things his skills could be used to improve.

    @Jim

JS-JIT requires some understanding of PPC-assembly, not sure wether Fab is an expert on that.

    Oh, interesting.
I was looking at PPC assembler and its the only ISA I've seen since the 68K that looks like it would be worth considering.
And, yeah, I'm sure Mark can do it.
Its just that he has a lot of other irons in the fire right now.

I'll just shut just and donate to the bounty.

Yes, but don't you want to hazard a guess as to what makes it so fast? Hint: It has something to do with the topic of this thread :-)

Yes, you're right (I should go to bed immediately). I meant to say it had something to do with the topic of this thread.

    Oh, I don't care.
    I found it informative.

What's wrong about letting bigfoot decide for himself which project he lays his priorities on? I don't think that the quality of his work for MorphOS itself will suffer from this bounty....

A web browser is today the most important program any OS have. So improving it should not be seen as a step back.

When he's done with JIT, maybe he can go for the PCI problem. Anyway, it's not up to us but to him right? :-)

We should be happy about a speedup of OWB in just 60 more days- That means it will already happen this year. I am sure bigfoot will be happy to take the one or the other bounty afterwards again. And maybe that time it will be PCI-X. But maybe he is bored of waiting in fornt of OWB all the time, himself? So he decided to take it now. And today that the money border has been reached he can just start :-)

Seamonkey, in comparison is a serious suck fest.

And as to "anal", I'd hope all of you don't feel too constricted by the topic of a thread.

I've learned so much when you diverged that I'd hate to see that impulse dampened.

Ah, so you tried it. I have not so can't share any experience on this one. What I've been trying from time to time though is the other browser I pointed out, Leopard WebKit, and have found it to be quite slick (even without JavaScript JIT). This one's even supposed to support WebGL on R300 or better (can't confirm as only Mac mini with R200 here).
Am I right assuming that you found Leopard WebKit to be "frankly dreadful" as well? After all, that's the only other browser I pointed out beside Seamonkey, and you used plural number.

Ye, the Leopard webkit was a better experience.
And while I like TenFourFox, I still use OWB primarily since I would prefer to be in MorphOS9rather than OSX).

I will also agree with Yasu on the importance of a good web browser, so naturally I look forward to any improvement in OWB.

    >"it's not up to us but to him

Of course, I have never been disappointed by the MorphOS developers' decisions so I would differ to them.

Same here of course. For me, testing (and benchmarking) TenFourFox has the primary purpose of determining what a JavaScript JIT could bring in terms of browser speed for MorphOS running on the same hardware.

Yeah, webkit didn't really cut it either.
JIT JavaScript would be a nice improvement.
Its curious, as support for PPC Macs under OSX wains I'm finding that I greatly prefer to be running under MorphOS.

So it really bugs me when I see posts on sites like Amiga.org that suggest NG OS based systems can't replace mainstream systems.
OSX and Windows only when I have to.

    It seems 3.4 has:

    Welcome news.
I will have to do some research and find out which models have a 66mhz PCI slot for my Voodoo3.
It looks like it might be easier to use two video cards in these G5s than the later PCI-E models (when they are supported).
And a few tests I have made on cards we might see support for after the R300 makes me think the AGP models performance should remain on par with the PCI -E models anyway.

    Update:
Unconfirmed, but it looks like any PCI or PCI-X G5 should handle a PCI video card (although that may lower the operating speed of the PCI-X slots).
