Well i finaly have (eth0) internet working with PegXLin and also within MOL using tun device with ip masq.

Here's the question, i have 128MB ram in my peggy, wich is very low, consitering linux has to boot first and what's left is for MOL, so i like to turn many stuff off when linux boot's, what's the best way to do this ?

    Bye,
Felix. (Writing this with MacPPC-IE under MOL ;-)

Well how did you do that!!! I am eyes and ears.
Mandrake is miles ahead with configurationtools.
But anyway iptables, pppd etc. all that stuff where is it??
How to install if one has NO connection.
Debian great ! No netconfig , no linuxconf, no connection
, a lack tools that enables ppl to do their own config.
I will give it one more day and than I will do format Debian:-)

Wel i downloaded PegXLin and burned it with BurniIT ;-)
I installed PegXLin and then i setup my xfree86 server.

Now i have a working debian with mol running without
internet at all. (I already had a macos image file..)
    I setup my internet settings, eth0 /dhcp.

Then i downloaded the 2.4.22 kernel here:
    http://people.debian.org/~luther/pegasos/2.4.22/

I installed all .deb packages on the linux side, and i
put the 2-4-22 zimage (vmlinuz) in my bootimages
    partition.

I also downloaded the kernel sources and recompiled
the kernel to my needs, but i think it's not realy needed.

Then i booted linux with the 2-4-22 image, and i had
internet on the linux side, then i needed to cofigure
the network for mol, i uncommented the tun line in
the mol net config in /etc/mol.

It didn't work right away, so i found guarddog (firewall) install
with pegxlin was not letting mol have internet :) So i turned
off the firewall, and it worked :-)))))

    Bye,
    Felix.

I use os 9.1, pegxlin has a very recent version
of mol (0.9.69 if i remind well).

I read that osx doesn't run yet or partly or very
    unstable on a peggy.

    Bye,
    Felix.

    Hello Felix et.al

Congrats on the linux installs! I upgraded to PegXLin on my Peg and I cant get eth0 configured for DHCP on my network. How exactly would I do this? I tried to follow the read me, but I need some help.

Francois (FMAN) was running OSX pretty stable. You need to run the x.68 version of MOL.

    TIA

Ok first of all, you need the 2.4.22 kernel, not
the one that comes with pegxlin, so please install
that first, and boot linux with the 2.4.22 image.

Then you boot linux (with the 2.4.22 image) and then
you login kde3, and there's a icon named 'configure network' premade for us :)

Click the icon and a texteditor will appear, here you have the loopback device and you eth0 device, standart its on static, you have to remove the static line with dhcp and save it.
(If the icon isn't there i believe the file to edit is etc/network/interfaces)

Then there's another icon restart network or such,
with that action you should have internet via eth0.

But how i describe is my situation, i have a cable modem isp and they have dhcp enabled.

    Hope it helps,
    Felix.

I gave Debian a long shot. I will format the stuff and if Debian has the 'same' networking tools as Mandrake9.x
then I 'll think it over again. For me it's still a mess.

I removed the "dhcp-client" and replaced
with "pump" using the original debian cd
    as an apt-get source:

    apt-get remove dhcp-client
    apt-get install pump

You should be able to do this through
    "KPackage" too. Change your network
config file to for DHCP as mentioned
    in the PegXLin doc too.

After this my DHCP connection works fine,
but I haven't tried with mol yet.

is there any docs or readme to how to do this ?

i installed the .deb file for the 2.4.22 kernel and the drivers, booted with the vmlinuz 2.4.22 boot kernel, and got alot of
errors and modprobe didnt find stuff, and something about iptables, internet didnt work even if i could ping google.com
but http://google.com didnt load, so i removed the 2.4.22 kernel .deb(with Kpackage) and started linux again with the pegxlin boot image and everything was ok again.

And for MOL, do i need an own partition with HFS for installing
in, or MOL uses a directory in linux ?

    ????

Installing the kernel with apt-get ? these kernel doesnt have the drivers stuff for run in Pegasos ( as i know ) !!!

You need to download the source of the linux kernel with the drivers, no?

Then do you can run the latest mol version using the latest mac os x without problems?

Sure many on the net, but you don't need that,
just click the .deb files with kde3 and install them.

    >i installed the .deb file for the 2.4.22 kernel and the drivers, >booted with the vmlinuz 2.4.22 boot kernel, and got alot of

Yeah sure, you will get some modprobe errors,
but not that many, did you install the .deb kernel
modules for 2.4.22 ??? ip tables should only state
some LOG errors. And did you configure your network
    to use eth0 and dhcp??

    >And for MOL, do i need an own partition with HFS for installing

You can use a partition of hdfile image,
partition you can create a linux partition
with morphos, and then goto linux and do:
    hformat -l "Mac" /dev/hd<xx>

And if you use a file image you do:
    dd if=/dev/zero of="/mnt/file.img" bs=1024k count=900

change the /mnt/file.img to your needs, and the count is the amount of MB the file is going to be, no more then 2000!!

Then hformat the image file like the partition:
    hformat -l "Mac" /mnt/file.img

Now you setup the mol macos config file in /etc/mol/.

    Bye,
    Felix.

You need the kernel image modules, alsa, cloop, and the zimage to boot with. Not with apt-get, but from the site i mentioned
    before in this forum.

And if you can run MacOSX, i don't know, some say yes,
some say no, i have OS9.1 here, i like to get OSX soon..

    Bye.

    Hi again,

I've now managed to install OS8.6 on a 2gb partition. Mol starts file and the os boots, but when i try to access internet the whole emulation hangs,
i see the page load but everything stops.

I have 256mb ram, and after pegxlin linux is loaded i have like 15-16 free memory and the swap disk is unused(1gb)
So i try to just boot into shell and start mol without KDE running to gain more memory but
the same happends, hangs when loading IE.

Anyone have similar problems ? Or do i need
    a newer mac os ?

I also have very low memory in mol, but then again
i have only 128mb, but did you set the amount of memory
in your molrc.macos config file ???

This is why i started this subject, because i like to
disable many things when pegxlin startsup.

Did you also setup TCPIP correct within MOL ?

    Bye.

    @Felix

Thanks for your reply to my post. I'm confused though. How can I install Sven's new kernal 2.4.22
if I cant take the Peg online with Linux? Can I just put it in my Boot img partition and load from there?
I'm new to Linux so please simplify what I need to do. My current situation is I just have the default install of the latest PegXLin... I cannot get online at all... I have an ADSL line with a LinkSys router. I would be using DHCP..

    @Cathogan

I have MOL running with OS9.1 I recommend you use OS 9 and higher for stability. You are lucky you have it going online though!

yes, it was set as 64mb as default so i tried that
and also raised it to 128, but it hangs on both.

    Quote:

When loading a site i see briefly the page loads, but it hangs before it renders the page, so i guess
it works, but i would assume if it was set wrong
i would get a message like 'could not find page' or
    similar messages.
I can play along with all kinds of settings and change screen res. in macos so everything else works fine, and in system info or whatever its called i see after a macos boot it uses 18-19mb
of ram, so there should be enough available.

I found a few other ram sticks, one 512mb, one 256mb, but linux dont boot when using them, i get kernel error and 'segmentation fault' but they
work with morphos. Booting linux with argument
mem=256 doesnt make them work either.

I think ide dma is on, can this cause problems
    for the mac system ?

The problem seems related to the Radeon either it's a bug in the kernel or in the hardware (when the AGP is in use), MOL 0.9.69 would randomly crash when my Radeon 7000 AGP was in use, but when I switched to my PCI Voodoo 4500 it worked just fine, and no random crashes, the only problem then is that colors are screwed up in 24 bit mode (looks like it's byte swapped).

I have MOL up and running now and I am
    having problems getting the network
to work on the Mac side too. I have a
DHCP connection working on Linux but not
sure how to pass this to MOL? Changing the
default config options in mol "net config"
    doesn't seem to work.
