PowerMac G4 and Radeon 7500

    Hi,

I have an issue with MorphOS 2.7 on a PowerMac G4 400MHz. According to GraphicBoards, I have a RadeonRV200 QW (Radeon 7500). The problem is that the display is very slow! Everything is slow (even move a window) like the graphic card is not supported.

Is there a fix for this issue?

    Thanks.

Maybe not the real answer you want, but getting a reflashed Radeon 9200 or as such will make you a lot happier. I had more or less the same issue on a 800Mhz powermac with the original Radeon.

For know I would turn off the eyecandy ... My Efika with 400Mhz and Radeon 9250 couldn't handle it very well, so your setup isn't going to cope with that either.

And altough MorphOS is light enough to run on 400Mhz, get a faster cpu for a better experience. According to litte info you give, I suspect you have an "AGP Graphics" or "Gigabyte Internet". The fastest OEM cpuboard that will fit in there is a 500Mhz one, if you want it faster you should look to Sonnet, newertech or as such.

    Hi Benlaug,

I'm surprised that you have noticable slowdown with this setup - Radeon 7500 should have 64MB vram at least, which should be plenty for normal usage. A 400MHz G4 is still a mighty processor.

How much memory (RAM) is installed?

In terms of 'turning off the eye candy':

Go to the the system preferences panel (Right click on the desktop, select 'settings>system'.)

    enter the 'screens' settings.
select 'Ambient' and hit the 'edit' button.
uncheck 'enhanced display' and hit 'OK' then 'Save'

    enter the 'Display Engine' settings.
uncheck 'allow double buffered screens' and 'allow triple buffered screens'
    hit 'Save'

See if this speeds up your experience. If so, play around with these until you find the best combination of speed/performance for your system.

NB - you are aware that Ambient slows down after around 30 minutes if it is unregistered? (How could anyone ignore that annoying popup reminder?!)

    @Benlaug

I had this issues with a few cards in the past. IIRC it's related to a DMA transfer problem to the Radeon. You should contact the MorphOS team via the official bugreport function in MorphOS to get a Radeon driver with a workaround.

Actually, Radeon 7500 cards start at 32 MiB VRAM, as you can see for instance there:

    https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?topic_id=7518&forum=3

Apple used those in some of its gear:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP78
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/stats/powermac_g4_800_qs.html

That's also the one Oepabakkes is referring to.

If it is only 32MB of ram you could be running out of video ram, that would make it run slow, it may be worth adding a video memory monitoring thingy to your info bar just to see if it's running out.

Do you have any other cards in the PMac ?

My 1.8GHz Quiksilver also had an 7500 (32MB) which was o.k. without enhanced displaye/double/tripple-buffering but still noticeable slower than the 1.5GHz MacMini

Replacing it with a 128MB 9250-PCI solved that problem but only until I added an SBLive (slideshow due to those DMA probs).

Now running a 9000(non-pro) AGP with SBLive and all is fine.....

Maybe it's no problem in an MDD ?

I run Morphos on Powermac 466MHz with 512MB RAM and flashed Radeon 7000 64MB.
It is fast enough to play Virtual Grand Prix 2. No need to upgrade! :-)

That 32MB extra on your GPUcard already makes the difference

    2013 update:

I run Morphos on Powermac 1GHz with 1GB RAM and ATI Rage 16MB.
    Upgrade urgently needed!
