Powermac MDD 1.42Ghz or Powermac Digital Audio with Sonnet 1

I did score a Powermac MDD DUAL 1.42Ghz today for 70€. And I have a Powermac Digital Audio with Sonnet 1.8Ghz. I was wondering what would be the fastest of the two ? Did anyone had the chance to compare them with MorphOS ?

If the MDD is as fast as the older powermac with 1.8Ghz Sonnet, I might as well sell the Digital Audio with the MorphOS registration.

Some tests have been reported, but I would suggest that you load up MorphOS on both and run some tests of your own and report back to us what your test results are, as well as your subjective feel of which one is fastest. Please use some "real world" tests, instead of just raw number crunching, or in addition to the number crunching tests.

Choose a few of the most CPU demanding MorphOS native programs and run them on each machine while trying to accurately time their performance.

The dual 1.42GHz G4 has L3 cache, which should make it as fast, or faster than the 1.8GHz Sonnet in some applications. You might also want to look into the possibility of over-clocking the dual 1.42GHz G4s to something above 1.5x to 1.6x to get the fastest possible MorphOS compatible computer, but is there any reason to over-clock an old G4 Mac when MorphOS2.x runs so fast already on them?

I have the dual 1.42Ghz model (I actually have a Sonnet dual 1.8Ghz 7447 installed in it at the moment) and a Quicksilver with 2Ghz 7448.
I've changed the fans on the Quicksilver so that it's a lot quieter without making it run hotter.
I've tried the same on the MDD but I just can't get results I'm happy with. It's still an ongoing project, maybe I'll get there in the end. So based purely on how I feel about it I prefer the Quicksilver. No idea which one is actually quickest as they both run morphos very well, i just seem to like my Quicksilver more.
None of this helps you though :-P

I think it will prove hard to surpass Ruud's Quicksilver 2002 with 2.13 GHz 7448 ;-)

Did you re-clock it from the 2.13 GHz you ran it overclocked at before?

No, it's still clocked at 2.13Ghz. I was just stating it's "official" clock speed ;-)

Still it has some other benefits: place for two optical drives or with some hacking a USB frontpanel ( I am really missing that on the Powermacs: USB in the front ). Faster IDE and it can take a bigger hd compared to my Digital audio. And does an MDD have a problem with 1.5gb ram (while running MorphOS)?

I have 2gb RAM in my MDD and it doesn't have any problems showing up as 1.5gb RAM in MorphOS

    @Ruud,

I worded my previous post poorly and did not mean that he would have the "fastest" MorphOS compatible computer, just that if he overclocked the MDD it might be the fastest of the two he has, at least in some tests.

Since you have a 2.13GHz 7448 PowerMac running MorphOS2.x I guess you have no problem watching 720p video content on it, correct? Can it do 1080p content?

I knew what you meant, it was Andreas_Wolf that was nitpicking though.

I need to do some more thorough testing but in some brief tests I made a few weeks back (when the cpu was clocked at 2.0Ghz) html5 youtube was ok in 720p but 1080p was a struggle. I'll run some proper tests when i have some free time.

I wasn't. I really thought he meant "the fastest possible MorphOS compatible computer".

My apologies. I was only being half serious anyway and forgot the: :-)

Something tells me Frank or one of the other MorpOS developers has the fastest MorphOS compatible computer. :-P

Well it sure is a nice working machine. But the noise it makes... that's just amazing! It sounds like it can take-off and fly away any moment.

I really have to do something about that.

Which graphics card are you using? For 1080p a radeon 8500/9100 will probably be needed.

I've got a Radeon 9000pro 128MB installed at the moment. I have an 8500 64MB I could try re-flashing for mac use. I've also got various 9700 and 9800 cards but I presume the current public driver lacks the maturity of the 8500 etc driver.

That will do nicely. A water cooled 2.7. Why do I picture Wile E. Coyote with rocket propulsion when I think of MorphOS running on that?
