Has anyone installed MorphOS 2.7 on a 1.42 Ghz eMac? They have Radeon 9600 graphics so you would think they'd work.

Nobody in the MorphOS Team had a chance to test this model. It should work with 2.7 but we cannot guarantee this.

Would be great if someone had a chance to test and shared the results here.

With that reply, I guess that there is no check built into MorphOS2.7 that searches which model Mac and what the CPU speed is, before proceeding with the installation script? I thought that there was some kind of check in the past, that would prevent installation from proceeding on Mac models that were not supported, but have nothing written by the Team to support such an thought.

Lots of 1.42GHz eMac's available at decent prices, so it would be good if someone that already owns one could try to install MorphOS2.7 and report back here with their results.

The only problem with the 1.42 Ghz eMacs is their Radeon 9600 graphics do not have hardware 3D support under MorphOS (yet).

Yes, according to some MorphOS Team members (e.g. geit) there really has been such a check that prevented MorphOS from booting (not just from installing) on unsupported models, but it's never been about CPU speed, else overclocking wouldn't have been possible without rendering MorphOS incompatible. AFAIK this check was said to have been about the model identifier, but which in case of the 1.42 GHz eMac wouldn't have prevented MorphOS from booting anyway, as that has the same ID as the older 1.25 GHz model that is explicitly supported:

Here it's really just that prior to MorphOS 2.6 the Radeon 9600 wasn't supported in any way.

Finally someone who tried, and with success even. Nice :-)

Thank you for providing evidence that 1.42 GHz eMacs are working with MorphOS.
I think it would be good if you criticaly test the installation and the morphos-tem should add that model then to the list of supported hardware.

I'll run some thorough tests soon. Haven't had a chance yet as I only got the eMac this morning.

Thanks for confirming that MorphOS2.7 works on the 1.42GHz G4 eMac. There are tons of these computers becoming available off business leases and from schools where they have been recently replaced with newer systems.

I can't remember what amount of VRAM the 1.42GHz eMac has (32mb I think) installed in it or if there is any option to have different graphics installed in any of the models of eMac with the 1.42GHz G4 (I doubt it as they are probably just like the MacMini with the graphics card non-changeable on the motherboard). Since the eMac only has a 17" CRT screen with limited maximum resolution possible, 32mb of VRAM will probably be okay for 99.5% of all your MorphOS computing tasks.

Good thing the screenshot shows it has 64MB.

Nice! I had not seen the screen shot of it running on the 1.42GHz eMac yet.

Those eMac's weigh a ton and are not fun to move around, but if anyone wants a great starter MorphOS2.x system, this 1.42GHz model is a good one to look for (might be able to find for free, or very cheap, but not on eBay).

Any word on Radeon 9600 3d support? These 1.42Ghz eMacs are nearly free.

    @redrumloa,

I don't remember seeing any reports about 3D support for the 9600 being finished yet, but I am sure they are working on it.

The 1.42GHz eMac could be the best bargain for getting a nice performing MorphOS2.7 system, if you can find one that has not already been bought by someone trying to make a quick profit on eBay. I think a lot of schools and some businesses that bought dozens of these models are just giving them away when they switch out entire labs or offices of these old systems. You can find them by the pallet on eBay, but some people have been trying to sell them for between $100 - $250, probably after buying them for $20 - $35 each.

Seems to have been done now:

"Only 1.25 Ghz and 1.42 Ghz eMac models have been tested and are officially supported."
