    Hi

I have been suffering a strange behaviour lately on my peg2.

Usually when I bootup the system it stucks on the OF and if i do a ls /pci/ide/ I dont get any IDE drive listed but an OK prompt.

It seems that it doesnt recognize any of my IDE drives ( which are in good working condition ) unless I do a set-defaults on thew OF. The tricks survives the resets but each time i do a cold bott I have to re-do the thing.

    Any hints?

Since i have my Peg2, i always had to reset once before ide drives are detected. AFAIK this is due to a quite flaky ide detection timing in OF. You didn't encounter this bug before just by luck.

I was told there was a way to change timings a bit, but i can't remember. However i'm sure someone will and help you. :)

I have the sameprob. After Powerup only one of the two harddisks shows up. No matter how much boot delay I use .. I allways have to reset once.
    ..
Yep,this is one of those things, where OF can be improved :-)

Strange, I had mine do this a few times in the past, but once I got a new PSU and then a replacement CPU card I havent seen it since. The only things in my current system that are now changed are the PSU and that CPU card. This was over a year ago and I can boot right into my boot menu on my drives with no trouble at all.

    Hey guys

AFAIK the problem is the type of Hard drive used. Some brands dont get recognized properly and a reset is needed for it.

    magnetic

ps Also try to re-arrange the ide configuration of the drives - primary/secondary

Below is a cut'n paste from an old post of mine on this issue:

    Quote:

I have had this problem all along since the beginning with the Pegasos II (G4 only, with the G3 it works just fine, same motherboard, same hardware, just a different CPU card). I have a Seagate HDD and I think they may be a little slow during initializing in coold boot (or the firmware is too fast ;-)). If I reset the computer just seconds after I power it up, then the harddrive is already spinning and is ready to shoot, but I can never cold boot right away from coold start. :-( I think this is not just a Seagate problem, but also certain IBM discs and also some others.

I have addressed this problem since the very first public version of the firmware (I was a Peg2 owners from the first batch). I have e-mailed b-plan about this and I have made comments in public forums. There has been many firmware upgrades since then, but this far it doesn't seem like anyone has taken this (BIG!) problem seriously enough!

I had great hopes that this latest firmware update would change these things, but it certainly didn't! :-(

An open firmware variable like "IDE Delay" or such, where you can set a value in seconds, would probably solve the whole thing! But untill anyone takes this issue serious enough I guess you will have to manually program a delay loop (search the morpzone forums).

Work-around 1: Simply do a warm-boot by hitting the reset button after the harddrive has finished cold-booting.

Work-around 2: Try re-arranging the IDE units and/or add some hardware. This *can* delay the boot process enough for your harddrive to get ready before probed for. It's a long-shot and may call for a little experimentation, but AFAIK it has worked for some.

Work-around 3: Make a delay script in the firmware. Go to this old thread and look at the posts on second page from "mat":

We are all waiting for a new firmware version. And I'll tell you what, if this *embarrasing* issue is not fixed when it arrives, I will personally take a walk over to b-plan and punch somebody in the stumach! ;-)
