Serial port, how good is it? How compatible?

Hopefully you guys can answer a quick question for me, save me some testing time.

How good is the serial port device under MOS1.4? Is it complete enough to use it with say a 56K modem and MiamiDX? What about Terminal programs?

Just make sure you disable the serial debug going out over the port; otherwise, it miami/modem operation should be fine.

There's no problem at all with serial port. I've used it with a 56K modem for internet & fax.

... as long as you disable debug output.

The serial port only works in 8n1 mode (driver limitation). But at 115200 with a PowerPC behind it, it will work pretty damned well with any modem and any TCP/IP stack.

I don't recommend using the serial port for Internet. I've been using a Hagenuk Speed Dragon and it's horrible slow, even running under 115200 bps. If there isn't another option to go online, well ... :)

I wonder if there are more people with a Speed Dragon (I have one!) at home than a Motorola PowerStack? :)

Why not? I use Pegasos' serial port to transfer files to my Mac PowerBook-150 with help of Terminus program (i used it for a while on my Amiga and like it). BTW, there is complete Term 4.7 source code on Aminet, why not to port this useful app? My speed is 57600 (Mac's limitation), it works well.
Also i tried TrapDoor to connect to my old FidoNet node. It connects but can't transfer files, a lot of errors arise. I think it's trapdoor's incompatiblity, it messes something with serial port on low level AFAIK (VirusZ cried about changing interrupt vectors when i started TD), i don't know why. People say Gotcha works fine.

1st thing to check is if the serial debug output is disabled.

Check in OF the boot command, it must contain the option 'ramdebug'.

Which software do you use? Is the cable okay (not mixed up with an null modem cable, all contact given, etc.)
Does the same modem + cable work on another setup?
If connected to the Pegasos, try to communicate with the modem directly using some terminal software.
Does it answer on a plain at command? If it does not return an okay on at, then something *is* wrong. If it does return an okay then you should play a bit with the at commands.

IIRC I used "term", but I am not at home at the moment to check that.

Pegasos 1 - broken serial port news:

    56k modem which works with MorphOS 1.4.2 & Peg1 G3 and my Peg2 G4 - DOESN'T work with friend's Peg1 G3 (broken serial port?).
It doesn't work with the same modem, same MiamiDx, same configuration, same MorphOS, etc. (ramdebug enabled)

    Terminus doesn't work too
    :-?

What to do now? Please help.

Hmm, my be. One question :
If Pegas is reset, modem is reset ?
    Modem's LED is flash ?
    2. Have you or frand logic tester ?

Try under Linux to determine the exact source of a problem

Hey, you say wrong thing. Serial port has no reset pin so resetting Pegasos does nothing to the modem. LEDs can flash because some bits are ocassionally sent over a wire during port reinitialisation.
