Non standard boxes... A3000 case?

Has any of you tried to fit the Pegasos II inside the case of an A3000? Of course this case probably does not have supports to attach a motherboard in the standard (ATX?) spots, but that can be fixed. Do the dimensions of the board and CPU riser card fit? What is the height/width/length of a Peg2 with full height graphics card? If it does fit, what power supply works best (assuming one has to remove the current one)? I assume you can cut out part of the support between the two floppy bays (if you had two) to make room for a CD-rom (or maybe even put it in the back so you won't have to damage the plastic front cover). What problems other than these did you encounter? I really liked the box of the A3000, and this would be the nicest way to modernise it ;)

    Cool concept.

the Pegasos is about 3.5 inches high with cpu card installed iirc. You can use an SFX PSU (uses in slim micro atx cases) The CD ROM hack should work... have fun!

ALSO If you do it please make a report with pics :-)

You can also use low profile AGP cards... I have an Radeon 7500 low
    profile in my Peg2...
I use a fanless notebook PSU (65W) with ATX voltage converter board,
enough to power a G3 Peg2 with harddisk and DVD-ROM.

I measured the box and I think it should fit. The motherboard of the A3000 is really low, but of course to isolate a motherboard from the metal case most are on some sort of supports - I think usually motherboards are a bit higher than this one. With a motherboard as low as the normal A3000 one, I checked the height of a full height card (GeForce 3 Ti200) and in principle it should fit (well of course I will have to put a voodoo or radeon in it - but those are of the same height). I will probably make an entire new bottom half of the case and use only the plastic front + top metal box. This because the holes (all of them, connectors at the back, PSU, ATX screws) will probably be in totally different places and I would have to patch it up anyways. Because I will make the bottom half, the entire box can be a tiny bit higher if needed to allow more room for supports of the motherboard (for isolation from the bottom metal plane) and still not having a full height card touch the top. The motherboard would only be a fraction (between 1/4 and 1/3) of the length/depth of the case so it would easily fit in that direction. The CD-rom would indeed go in the back so I won't have to cut out the nice plastic case (or perhaps on the side but then I would have to destroy part of that). I have two floppy drive bays in the front of my plastic case, perhaps one could be a normal drive, the other a catweasel (or whatever it's called). Now I will just have some A3000 internals lying around lol.

Only one problem so far, I'm waiting till a PPC970 Peg3 and MOS1.5 comes out till I'm going to do this, so it may take a while before I start. And hopefully that motherboard will still fit and be mini-ATX as well (ok it can become bigger but then I'd have to actually take care where I place certain drive bays and the PSU). I will definitely post photo's of course, but it's a long way off (peg 3 isn't scheduled till atleast the fall I thought).

    Thx for the update

PPC970 Peg? Come on man. The present tech is more than sufficient for your MOS needs! Also, dont forget you can use PCI/AGP riser card setup to make the cards horizontal and fit the a3k case ok...

Yeah riser cards could be an option as well, though I have never seen one for AGP yet (wonder if the lines will not become too long, might get interference if done incorrectly as well with these high data pulse speeds). I think however that it will just fit without a riser card. By the way a funny detail, the zorro riser card of the A3000 is about the height of a full height PCI or AGP card.

I'm certain a G4 will not be fast enough for my needs, though the OS (MOS) is blazingly fast, computationally intensive tasks (compiling very large programs and running these very demanding apps) are still processor limited ;-) A PPC970 would be in the same league as what I use now on linux at work (AthlonFX53, i.e. the fastest single processor system available).
