Apparently AmiSSL v4.0 has recently been released: AmiSSL version 4.0

However, there is no release for MorphOS or for AROS, as the head of the project at GitHub, Jens Maus, stated he had no-one from MorphOS development team or anyone else using the MorphOS system make contact with him to offer to work on a MorphOS version of AmiSSL, and the same seems to be true for AROS.

The only releases available are for OS4 and 68k Amiga systems it seems, for now. :-(

I saw the thread for "Best SimpleMail experience for MorphOS?" the other day but thought that's currently not of any interest to me, but if you'd titled it - "AmiSSL v4 released" or something similar then I'd have not started this thread, as what is SimpleMail likely to get from AmiSSL v4?

Or am I missing some insight into SimpleMail? :-?

The same as YAM (if SimpleMail will be changed to use AmiSSL v4 instead of any older version, that is), i.e. an up-to-date SSL/TLS implementation as a shared library. Using a shared library means SSL/TLS can be updated or bugfixed without releasing a new compile of the mail client.

A guy from the MorphOS mailing list confirmed that the 68k version works under MorphOS!

Thanks for the info. I just tried and can confirm this, too. Strange that Jens Maus claimed on the MorphOS mailing list that "using the AmigaOS3 version of AmiSSLv4 in MorphOS is causing some trouble", then.

Well, on OS4 68K components are known to cause problems in many cases, which need to deactivate JIT etc.

Maybe he thinks the same issues may happen on MorphOS. MorphOS is more AmigaOS3 compatible than AmigaOS4. Thats for sure.

    ", then.

Did you try AmiSSL 68k with the Morphos Version or the 68k Version of YAM?

I've contacted Jens, he answered me :

"if a MorphOS developer could actually look into helping me in get the PPC native MorphOS version of AmiSSLv4 finalised (it already compiles, but crashes due to broken baserel support). But I were unable to find MorphOS developers that are willing to support AmiSSLv4. If you have luck and find a talented MOS developer please send them over to https://github.com/jens-maus/amissl

To answer my own question. It works with the Morphos Version.
I am now able to use my main mailaccout for smtp again.
    Thank you, Jens.

Would a bounty help to motivate some morphos developer to support
Jens to do a native version?

That possibly depends on your definition of "MorphOS developer"... ;-)

But it already works? Is it so slow that it affects your e-mailing experience negatively in any noticeable way?

It has to be Ralph Schmidt.

But seriously: whoever is able to help Jens.

You are right the rational benefit at least regarding mails is neglectible.

For me it is more about: "If its possible to have a morphos version of a software I use I want it"

    @weiseb

Yes I understand your point, but at the same time the purpose of the current MorphOS has always been to serve as a continuation of Amiga so the Amiga 3.1 API has always been part of the MorphOS API, thus Amiga software *is* MorphOS native software (and this even to a greater degree than OS4).

Some applications would definitely make sense to adapt to MorphOS, like Final Writer and Pagestream, etc if you can add a proper MUI GUI, Reggae support, etc. In other words, if the app gets improved by and utilizes MorphOS features in a way the Amiga version didn't. But if the only reason/change/benefit is a non-measurable speed difference coming from the different PPC binary output from a GCC vs. the Trance compiler, then the point kind of goes away IMHO.

With a future "MorphOS 4" the situation will drastically change though. :-)
