I tried the Radeon X800GTO AGP card and can confirm :

It does not work ! (at least with my 2GHz G5 PowerPC)

I do not get any picture !

Did you have MorphOS installed previously (before the gfx card swap) or are you trying to boot an AGP G5 Power Mac from CD using AtomBIOS card? Because the latter won't work.

EDIT: I just figured out X800 is not an AtomBIOS card, so you won't be able to boot anyway. You need a newer Radeon (or Apple BIOS for this card).

But it is, just too old version of AtomBIOS for MorphOS (see comment #21).

    Back again :-)

I bought a X1950 Pro Xtreme 512mb from ebay, dont know anything about AtomBIOS, but some suggested to leave the original card in the Mac.

Should i put the new X1950Pro in Slot 3 which is a X8 slot ? slot 2+4 is only X4

The Fan on the X1950Pro is huge and the Clear plastic side won't fit :-(
so i need to find another Fan/cooling solotion for the X1950Pro.

and last which PCIe Lan sould i look for ?

    Regards

    Peter

You should always put the Radeon in "main" slot, so the x16 one is the way to go. If you want to leave nVidia inside - use some other one.

You can get rid of the plastic deflector - the airflow should be fine enough without it.
Just make sure to put a piece of paper inside the right bottom hole for the deflector (notice the deflector had a white sticker there), there's an optical sensor you need to fool. Otherwise the fans will blow at full speed when the machine realizes there's no deflector present.

Take a look at this thread. You'll find a list of tested and compatible cards for your machine.

and you have to buy a sapphire for pci-express
i d'ont test another card but you can try

Radeon X1950 cards with 512 MiB have been reported (#8) to work fine with MorphOS, just that only 256 MiB are recognized (which is expected).

    Hi again

thanks for all info, very appriciated

The X1950 Pro 512mb works fine with MOS. except the Fan is huge so the clear plastic side won't fit anymore, so i have find another Fan/cooling solution.

Had some problems with installing MOS (no drive found), but found out the G5 is a little picky with use of new SSD, so i took and old Sata HD and it worked fine.

Next is to source a Wifi card for the G5 Quad...

is Wifi stable on MOS ? or is LAN realtek 8168 the best solution ?

which solution should i go for ?

i would love to have the "original" combo WiFi card from apple and the runway card to plug in the Mobo so i don't take up the last PCIe port and use the builtin antenna..

but will it work with MOS ?

I do think it will be hard to find :-(

    What's the alternative ?

and PCIe card with Wifi (older Atheros) ?

    what about a USB solution ? is't posible ?

Looking forward to get a snappy MOS machine with network :-)

    regards

    Peter

SSD: possible... some SSD are incompatible with old PowerMac

WIFI on PowerMac... i think LAN realtek 8168 is better solution...

Or cut a hole in the plastic deflector, or get rid of it completely (as I wrote in another thread).

Yes, it's SATA-I after all. There's been some clues that the "B" harddrve bay cable is more tolerant, but most SATA-III drives still won't work.

As for WiFi - it mostly depends on your network. Still, the same hardware seems to work better with the same network setup on OSX, so... I'd recommend Realtek anytime.

It will be 100% hard to find and pricey as hell.

A1027 with external antenna (or some adapter from MCX male to whatever type late G5 internal is using) or Atheros 5000 chipset based PCIe card.

    Not likely.

    Gembird NIC-GX1 with Realtek 8111C :-(

is there any chance it will work with MorphOS ?

    regards

I am thinking about adding a SATA SSD into "B" slot in my G5 PPC. So does someone know which

manufacturer works ? And which SATA should it be ? (SATA I / II / III) ?

It needs only to be a 128GB drive or so.

    Anyone ?

Manufacturer is not entirely safe to go by. There have been different models from the same manufacturer where one model has been reportedly working but another has not (which may or may not have been a case of bay A vs. bay B, who knows). If you search for the relevant terms (G5, SSD, SATA), you can find many threads here on MorphZone with reports of working model names/numbers.

    > And which SATA should it be ? (SATA I / II / III) ?

Generally, SATA3 SSD with G5 Mac's SATA1 controller is a gamble, but there have been specific SATA3 SSDs put to work successfully. SATA2 is an effectively safe bet.

I use the OWC Extreme SSD, sure you won't see the performance of it on SATA II but I wanted to get the fastest I could get. Picked one up cheap and worked perfect for years.

There's a thread with people reporting working drives.

Interesting ... I did a look in the "A" slot from my G5 (7,3) and see
in there a Samsung EVO 850 with 120 GB (which should be a SATA III drive?!).

I remember that sometimes when starting the computer the "folder" sign appeared
(no disk found ?!) and I needed to restart. Then it worked.

The Samsung EVO 850 is confirmed to be working.
In my case it runs as described in slot "A"

So was there a SATA I or II version of this ssd drive, which should only work
    in slot "A" ?

Maybe this ssd is somehow downwards compatible to the SATA I controller in there
    and thats the reason ?

    Yes, it is.

    > So was there a SATA I or II version of this ssd drive,

The Samsung 850 EVO never came as SATA1/2. And as far as I understand, the "phenomenon" with the G5 is such way that the drive either works on both ports or just on port B, but never just on port A.

    > Maybe this ssd is somehow downwards compatible to the
    > SATA I controller in there and thats the reason ?

Yes, apparently. As I wrote in comment #42, there are SATA3 drives that do work on SATA1 ports.

is there a way to check if MorphOS has found the Netcard/driver ? PCIscan or ?

I have inserted the NIC RTL8111 card.

but don't get an connection/ip to my network/internet

    in network i can see : rtl8168_eth.device:0

i have also tried static IP, if dhcp is'n supported.. no luck

If network prefs can see it, it should be working.
You could try ping to your router (in Shell) but my experience is that "no connection to internet" can often be solved either by a reboot (after saving your settings) or simply changing the entries in DNS server and hitting "Use" (which I guess kinda restart the network stack.).

    no luck with ping..

and when i ping my router i get answer :

    no route to host

    any suggestion ?

edit: its working now :-) after 2 restarts yes yes :-)

    edit 2:

auch not for long :-( after a reboot the networking is not working...

when i ping i get : no route to host...

and in logtool i get a lot of :

    int : RX Error
