How to capture audio on Mac Mini?

So I registered Audio Evolution a while back ago. Since then my eMac died.

My Mac Min came in the mail today, bit Apple seemed to go the artistic route and not include a freaking audio port, so I'm wondering... how do I use Audio Evolution?

How do Mac users even use garage band for that matter?

There's usually a microphone / audio in port. They seem to be phasing them out now though.

That said they're probably not that good, If you want decent quality audio in (or out) you'll need a USB audio interface.

With a Mac Mini, you can't. At least under MorphOS that is. You may use an USB based Soundcard, however that will work for OS X/Linux(?) only. So you have to get either a Powermac (with Audio in) or you may do your recordings with another OS and edit it with Audio Evolution afterwards.

Another Option might be a bounty which is appealing enought to get someone working on Poseidon (USB Stack) to get the needed stuff done, to support an USB Soundcard. Allas, since this "Problem" is wellknown for quite a while, I doubt that will happen any time soon.

You may be able to use one or two specific firewire Audio cards using Yomgui's Helios firewire stack.

There is discussion in this thread regarding levels of support for specific models.

I believe this list shows the level of support relating to the specific driver ported from linux, but I would check with yomgui first before buying one.

Alternatively, a USB>Parallel port & Midi interface might be a possibility to investigate, depending on sample rate/quality required.

USB Audio cards are a no, unfortunately. (Unless isochronous support slipped in with 3.x...?)

    LAME!!!!

Guess I'll start a bounty for a basic feature that EVERY OS should support by default....

...when I have a job again. Dang this is annoying.

My annoyances with this issues aside...

I am REALLY liking about everything else about 3.1.

Thank you guys, and sorry for getting so crappy, but I'm sure you all understand where I'm coming from.

My MacMini has only two usb ports and no eject button and apparently no pinhole to remove the disc when Mac is powered off. Thanks a lot Apple, well designed :)

I would seriously consider buying a portable field recorder that has a line-in
feature and supports 16bit aiff or wav recording. You could then record into the
device and simply transfer the data files over for editing on the Mac Mini.
Most of these units have removable SD cards so it should work well I think.

Check B&H Photo for an example of these kind of devices:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Portable-Digital-Recorders/ci/14934/N/4291085915

(Disclaimer: I haven't tried this myself but it seems like a reasonable way to get audio into
a machine lacking audio input capability)

i was using this on my mac mini and ibook on OSX back in the days :

    http://store.griffintechnology.com/imic

not sure if it would work on morphos though.
(it will probably be detected by Poseidon but no drivers..)

This looks like a reasonable solution for Mac mini audio input, actually.
Unfortunately, there is no isochronous transfer support in MorphOS USB drivers yet. So this won't work for MorphOS as-is.
It is not completely unlikely that this will change in a future update, though. It just hasn't been considered top priority so far.

You shouldn't blame the MorphOS developers for the lack of hardware ports. That is Apple's fault. Sell your MacMini and get a G4 PowerMac (they are usually always cheaper, sometimes only 1/5 the cost of the MacMini, if you don't have to ship it) and then you can either use the native sound ports, or get a SoundBlaster PCI card for $10.

MorphOS and AudioEvolution will work great on that setup.

No really it should, and I should not be told every time to spend more money on this, sell what I have and get that, or just dual boot and use this OS also.

The Amiga used to be the Media Machine. It was the hardware for artists. Not no more, not next Gen Amiga anyhow.

MorphOS says they have support for such and such hardware, but with lack luster USB support, missing MIDI support ( so it seems), no wifi support, and audio that is limited by ahi still to this day.

Yet, people are buying there product (after all it does shine in other less creative areas such as the web and with music and movie playback), and companies and coders are still making software for it.

The thing is though is that with the likes of Audio Evolution (which I paid for), Hd-Rec, and the upcoming pay for product, DigiBooster 3 coming out, only certain MorphOS users are going to be able to enjoy them fully (or partially in regards to midi), while the rest of us must suffer because our particular hardware isn't fully supported.

This in turn will only serve to effect the sales of future commercial products for MorphOS. I blew money in Audio Evolution which I can't use now because I wanted a compact computer in my recording studio as opposed to a big tower.

If customers are going to buy your product (and don't get me wrong, I do love it), then I think you should be obligated to ensure that the experience on their hardware of choice only gets better.

Likewise if people are going to code for and release commercial products for your OS, then you ought to show some love and make making their software work to the fullest on all MorphOS' supported hardware a top priority, no question!

Out of curiosity, what other MIDI software there is except for (maybe) a midi-player and old Bars and pipes which is way too outdated to use today(not completely useless of course, but still a pain in the butt to use compared to todays standards)?

    Need I say more?

    Ok I will.

Aside of the FREAKING AMAZING HD-Rec, I seem to recall someone involved with Digibooster saying that MIDI support was planned for Digibooster 3, just not upon initial release.

Now if we could only use the Meastrix trick that OS 4 and Amithlon can use, then we'd have acess to OctaMED S.S. In all it's glory as well!

    http://aminet.net/package/util/libs/TheMaestrix

Also with MIDI, more MIDI based programs could be written/ported.

I knew about Digibooster but since its not released and won't have MIDI support to my knowledge I didnt mention about it. I have never gotten SoundStudio to work under MorphOS, I have tried all the tricks in the world.

Will check HD-rec, you got my interest

Ya man, watch through that video! Even if you an't stand House music, you'll at least get an in depth look at the power under the hood of HD-Rec.

I wonder why MorphOS can't do OctaMED SS? That makes me a sad panda. :/

The answer to that is pretty obvious I think. The better question is why MorphOS can't do TheMaestrix.
