    Hi,
I just recently bought a PEG II. Today I tried to install MOS 1.4.5 to it but I'm having hard time with IDE interface. Most of the times it doesn't recognize my drives :( and the smartfirmware startup screen takes long time to load. I have tried my HD and CDROM with different settings even cable select, but nothing seems to work + the IDE interface never recognizes IDE-CF adapters.

I'm thinking the problem is with the firmware. Version I have installed is V1.1 (20040405172512)

Where can I download newer and how do I update the firmware?

    have you tried this combination?
1st IDE channel: master/single drive HD
    2nd IDE channel: master CD/DVD

    one device per channel...

First thing to check is type of cable.
It should be 80-wires and sometimes "round"
    cables have problems too.

Yes I have tried to use the HD in channel 1 as master and CDROM in channel 2 as master also, but that didn't help much. Best combination yet have been cable select for both drives and so that the CDROM is recognized as Master.

The cable I'm using is 80-pin and not rounded.

I'm still leaning towards firmware issue. Even if the problem isn't there it would be nice to know where to get the updates and how to update it.

    Thank you.

Umm isn't that the same firmware I have atleast according to date?

I was under the impression that there is a newer firmware available.

Possible. There was some nvram script, which should increase the drive detection delay, thus enabling drives to be detected properly. I can't give a link ATM tho'.

There's no newer publicly available firmware, than the one on bPlan's site. Which is the same you've already got with the machine. There were some 1.2 versions floating around "unofficially" tho. Try to get one. But be prepared, that a firmware upgrade can not only solve problems, but *trigger new ones* (f.eg. USB, video and memory compatibility problems).

    @Painkiller:

This is probably not in your case, but just to be sure: did you tryed
to clear MBR/RDB in your hard disk? I know many users had problems
with IDE devices and quite often that was a solution.

Yes MBR is cleared like stated in the Manual's trouble shooting section.

I read on PPA that someone tried with:
    HDwrite ide.device <unit> MOSSYS:c/reboot 0
(as the Pegasos manual is saying), but only writing some bigger file
(like boot.img) helped. Maybe you should try?

PS. I hope you know this operation will erase all your data on the HD?

Unofficial ? IIRC, Gunne from ggsdata provided a
file update-2004.08.10 and I think it was official.
Perhaps he is still offering that file.

Is it true that the last incarnation of the Pegasos 2, named "Open Desktop Workstatin" has the most recent SmartFirmware? I think it's not obtainable as an update for existing Pegasos.
Is there any tool to extract SmartFirmware from Pegasos, in order to put it into another one? It might be dangerous, if it's true that there are important differences among different batches of production boards.

    I already did that.

Now the drives are at two separate cables and both at shortests lenght possible, configured as master. Now I'm able to boot everytime after one reset. If I cold start the machine it wont recognize drives :(

But still I'm not able to use a CF adapter :( only a HDD that gives me boot problems :( Maybe I'll try another HDD if that works...

I'm not too keen about that latest FW update since some people have reported GFX problems etc.

at some point, bplan provided some beta 1.2 firmware to users having problems with the integrated one (that was my case). but it was at my own risk off course.

for the problem, at the firmware prompt, what does 'ls /pci/ide' report. Are the hd shown, at least ?

The HD is shown after reboot. I have propably found a fix for it in another thread, but I need clarification.

I guess I'm out of luck using a IDE-CF adapter :( But hopefully I can get my HD working.
