    Ave! I've just bought a USB keyboard (Logitech Cordless Optical - it works fine), and I have a question: Is it possible to use the keyb before boot in the OFW? How? I think the keyboard alias must be changed, but I don't want to try...

    As far as I know, USB keyboard support isn't enabled yet.

    That, and the keyboard would need to successfully implement the USB "bootkeyboard" protocol (which is a kind of hacky PS/2 emulation as far as I understand it.. is Chris Hodges around?).

    Logitech is such a good company though this is guaranteed.

    All you have to do is wait for it to appear in the OpenFirmware feature list :D

    A new OF is due any time now. I hope it will support USB keyboards. I hate having this old PS2 one installed just to boot up properly.

    USB Keyboard uses the HID Class (Mouse, UPS as well). AFAIK, it's not
    like PS2.

    But there's still a special, simpler boot protocol subclass that it can use which is ideal for firmwares (intended for!). Easier than implementing the full HID protocol.

    Either way.. should be in the firmware eventually. Not now though.

    The reason, because of I've written this question here was, that in the manual there is a line at the aliases section:

    keyboard /pci@80000000/isa@7/keyboard@i60

    So, I think, it's possible to modify this to a point a USB address.

    @timofonic:

    To be able to configure input to be at the serial console or ethernet or in the future a firewire device (some platforms have this, and it is a serial bus after all)

    You can access the OF by serial port NOW. Just unplug the keyboard.

    If you want to put that across telnet or SSH, you'll need a system to act as a server - on Linux, directing the serial tty to telnet or ssh is NOT very difficult.

    I just plugged my USB keyboard to the PS2 port using those USB-PS2 port converters that come with most USB mice (at least here in Japan). I thought it was intended only for mice, but it seems to work with some keyboards.

    Even the blue back light of my keys work perfectly :-)

    my keyboard
