Having alternatives to x86 is a good thing. Always wish the best for the underdog.

Yes, and that's also true for the non-PPC processors on most non-PPC boards.

18th August: "And here she is…. Mirari Proto 2…
With the factory production stage now complete, we’re eagerly anticipating the arrival of these new boards. We’re aiming for them to be in our hands by the end of this month, so keep an eye out for more updates as we get closer to shipping! Remember that a few components are still missing. Due to some stock issues regarding the specific type of PCIx [sic!] slot (with GPU lock) and header (s) these will be manually soldered by Harald on arrival. Here is a look at what our new boards will look like: (factory pictures for inspection purpose)

I am also very eager. But let them breathe - it was prototype #2 boards, 25pcs for developers and betatesters. ;-)

Please get it ready very soon,
my mac mini is broken now, so I don’t have any MorphOs
    machine now.

I don't have any hard info on their plans, but...

24(?) of the 25 board in the 2nd batch are still awaiting shipment as they need/want to implement 1 more feature (updating the FPGA in SW instead of needing a programing module).

They have sofar not said anything on what is next
    - do another small scale run aimed at developers/betatester that didn't make the list with this batch (which maybe any number from 0 to 100)
    - do a full production run hoping that enough people are happy with running Linux until MorphOS_3.20/OS4.x get released
    - partner with a reseller to finance a bigger run
    - do some the above AFTER MorphOS_3.20/OS4.x get released

Or in short don't expect to be running MorphOS on a Mirari anytime this year and you might just get some desktop Mac and see if you can get the license transferred there. Not 100% sure what their policy would be when replacing a Mini with an iMac or PowerMac.

    Thanks for your insights.

Hmm, this sounds bad to me.
I have a Power Mac MDD (G4@933 MHz) and Pwoer Mac (G5@2 GHz) here.
    Both with registered license.
But did not use them for years now.
They are too slow, too loud and they eat too much power in my point of view.

So will I wait for Mirari and focus on my A1200 and A4000 in the meantime.

What? The 933Mhz is my daily driver for development. Everything I commited within the last 15+ years was done with that PowerMac!

Sure but yours is a QuickSilver (or earlier?) while he claims a windtunnel MDD. So a tiny bit faster (bus) and whole lotta extra noise. Only issue is the MDD never shipped in 933MHz but jumped from 867 to 1GHz.

Power consumption shouldn't be that bad unless he is dragging around an unused 2nd CPU which he would be doing if it really a MDD since most were DualCPU, except for the 1x1.25GHz 2003 model. There also was the 1x1GHz but that was "FW800" not "MDD".

Are they slow? Depends mostly on the GPU I'd say and the default Radeon for MDD/FW800 was a 64MB 9000 which is better than any Mini.

So some clean up should produce a somewhat useable system about as restricted as the Mini.

    Hm, you may be right.
I am sure that was a MDD, so it might be
    the model 1,25 GHz.
I will have a look to it again.
But it was realy noisy, that‘s why I didn‘t use
it anymore. Maybe I can replace the ide harddisk
    with an ssd.

1,42 Ghz as far as I remember.
I will give it a try

1.42GHz would be the fastest DualCPU setup, so yeah thats gonna use some power for sure.

Depending how hot it really gets you might get away with replacing the fans with slower/better ones, but the MDD/FW800 design will always be louder than a comparable QS or older.

There is a CPU upgrade from Sonnet for the MDD with 1,67 or 1,8Ghz.

Not only OT, but also nitpicking !!

Sure 3rd party modules exist, but for a MDD/FW800 they tend to be rare and expensive (not that the older ones are cheap these days).

The question still remains what exact config eliot has and what combination of dual CPUs,bad airflow and aging fans is responsible for the noise.

I had a MDD Mac and i can't remember that it was noisy.

AFAIK early MDD's are notorious for their noisy fans in PSU (AcBel). The late ones, with Samsung PSU are quieter.

I have in box two 7457 CPUs, replacement for dual 1.42 7455. When I finish Pegasos upgrade, I will start with my FW800. 7457 have much lower TDP than 7455, so even overclocked should have lower temperature and noise.

So i did a small update on the site as i did not know, and therefore forgot to mention the original author of that fan and thermal code. Sorry Jaca!

So here is the updated text.

Since a few days it is possible to control the fanspeed withing MorphOS. Frank Mariak has adjusted some code originally written by “Jaca” for the Powerbook to read and operate the sensors controlling the temprature and fan speed. Great work by Frank and Harald for placing sensors on the board and his FPGA Microcode..
