Has anyone been able to run MorphOS in AmigaOne X5000-40 (beta), equipped with the quadcore processor? What U-Boot version is needed, and what is the latest available?

    Hello Renoir,

What is the version of u-boot present in your amigaone x5000-40 ? I have since 11 months an amigaone x5000-20 and here is its version.

    U-Boot 2014.04 (Oct 17 2016 08:22:22)
    ppc-elf-gcc (GCC) 4.7.3
    GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.25

In u-boot have your the choice to boot the 3 systems, amigaos morphos and linux ppc to launch ? If you are limited to only one system, amigaos this is bad from a-eon. If I am not wrong I suppose that you have also an amigaone x5000-20. Do you ? In the positive case you can try to exchange the sd-cards of the amigaone x5000-40 for the one from the amigaone x5000-20. Tell then us if the amigaone x5000-40 successfully boots or not, and if you have or not the choice of the 3 systems to launch.

Maybe Christian Zigotzky ? He is the maintainer of Linux for X5000. He is on Facebook.

One of the developers ought to be able to answer that. I believe the guys received at least two of these. The X5000-40 does have issues, as Andreas as covered before, it probably won't work until a further revision of MorphOS is made.

Its possible that they don't consider this variant officially supported yet (it is a beta, so its not available to the general public), but the hardware support list only mentions the X5000, it doesn't specify the core counts.

I imagine Mark and Frank are rather tired of dealing with the X5000. Considering the issues firmware updates and video card support have brought.

Have I? What X5000/40-specific issues are you referring to here?

    > the hardware support list only mentions the X5000

Yet, there has been P5040-specific support in MorphOS since at least v3.11:

Map the second Frame Manager on P5040 machines

    @Brumiga

I do not have the X5000-40 yet, so I cannot check the U-Boot version... In X5000-20 I have the 05-10-2018 Molsen which is the latest public release. MOS works ok with it, except that 'usb reset' is needed for booting from USB disks.

The U-Boots of these two models are not necessarily interchangeable.

    @ Renoir

Here you can see the latest firmware version that MorphOS supports (the page will be updated should new MorphOS compatible versions be released):

I'm sure most of you are aware of my efforts to port MorphOS to, and run MorphOS on, AMD64 hardware. To this end, I ended up writing a new kernel from scratch. However, this new kernel was actually first written for PowerPC before later being ported to AMD64. The main PowerPC hardware I developed this kernel on is actually the X5000. When run on the X5000, this kernel runs natively in 64 bit mode and it supports SMP. It already boots and runs both (or all four, depending on the CPU) cores of the X5000.

Not that this *really* answer your initial question for certain, but to me this at least sounds like the core MorphOS developer Bigfoot/Mark Olsen has practical experience of bringing up an OS *on either version* of the CPU, which is not very strange at all since he is the one who actually wrote the X5000 firmware ;-), so chances should be *pretty fair* IMHO that MorphOS (even with the original kernel) would run on either CPU version since the day when Cyrus board became supported by MorphOS.
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

Unfortunately Christian does not have a MOS compatible graphics board in his X5040, so he cannot test whether it works.

X5000-40 basically works fine with MorphOS. There are some known issues left with low speed USB devices like mouse/keyboard which still need to be addressed for a forthcoming MorphOS update.

The latest UBoot firmware which also supports MorphOS is dated 2018-Oct-5.

Yes, I'm aware of this. Of course, he could temporarily put the graphics card from his X5000/20 into his X5000/40 in order to test MorphOS there.
Anyway, that he should be the one to do the testing wasn't even my point. I just found it strange that some MorphZone user proposed on MorphZone to another MorphZone user to contact a further MorphZone user who was recently active on MorphZone via Facebook ;-)

Must have been Frank, or someone else, as the USB issues have been brought up before.

USB on P5040 indeed does ring a bell. So I just had a look and found the PM where you told me about it after Mark told you about it. This was as much as 3 years ago. Time flies.
