    Hey folks,

I have a powermac 7,3 and would prefer running the most powerful and fully supported GPU for both osx and morphos. Obviously linux is a wildcard here but having linux support would be great...but I'm not holding my breath for true 3d acceleration :)

I think the ati x800 xt is the ideal card for this, but it seems to be rarer than hen's teeth. Can anyone recommend a good path here? What would be "best" supported out of what I might be able to find?

    Thanks!

I had a flashed FireGL X3 on my G5 7,3 which translates to a X800 XT. It worked fine on MorphOS and I tried it one time on OS X where it worked too. It did however not work on Linux where it locked up the machine. I replaced it with a Radeon 9800 Pro (original Mac-BIOS) which worked on Linux, albeith rather slow.

Don't know if this is a 'flashed card issue' or the X800 XT by itself won't work on Linux. Is there any AGP X800 with original Mac-BIOS?

Yep. I got one. But precisely - it's X850XT. It's got both DVI and ADC connectors and it's AGP Pro type card. Looks like that:

When it comes to MorphOS performance the X1950 beats it. But it's quite unlikely that X1950 will work with OSX (I don't think there's a suitable Apple ROM for an AGP card).

Nice! And what's the state of Mac-BIOS X800X/X850XT performance on Linux? Just curious if they do run it and how well they fare. ;-) Not that I could try it, sold my G5 7,3 some time ago.

If you you give up OSX, the X1950 line (PC AGP version) is a pretty big step up. That is the fastest.

Sadly I need OSX for all the DAW stuff on it. :/

I can't really find any decent AGP Mac GPUs. Guess I just have to stick with what I have.

The X850XT seems to be available at some places if you search for its Apple PN (it's in comment #10 of the thread I linked to in comment #4). Prices are another matter, though.

Thanks. I did actually find a few sites claiming to carry surplus apple kit but they all seem just a bit dubious. I tried ordering from one of them (can’t remember which) and it took them a week to refund me the money saying they didn’t have it. Nevertheless I’ll see if I can find anything. Thanks, Andreas_Wolf.
